Single Blade Swiss Knives

The typical Swiss Army Knife consists of a multitude of tools. Almost all of them have variations of blades, can openers, bottle openers and drivers. But there are also a few models that just have one or two blades in them, like the Alox Solo, the 111mm Sentinel, the 84mm Secretary or the Alox Pioneer Pruner. These models have nothing but blades in them and utility-wise, may not be that much different compared to other non-multi-tool knives like the typical Spyderco or Benchmade.

Question is, how many of you guys here use these single or dual blade Swiss Army Knives as your basic knife? Or do you guys prefer your Swiss Army Knives to be what it quintessentially is: a multitool? Would you choose a Swiss Army Knife as a single blade knife over, say, a Spyderco? Or do you just carry a Swiss Army Knife because it can have functions that a single blade knife can't... and therefore making a single or double blade Swiss Army Knife not have any niche at all? Does a Swiss Army Knife with a single, or dual jack knife style blades make sense to you at all? Or is it just trying to be what it shouldn't be? Should it always have it's openers and it's drivers, in addition to the baldes, to be in your pocket?

:)

I prefer them to have tools. If I wanted to carry just a single blade I'd choose a spyderco, city knife, etc. As just a knife, I find the handles too skinny to use comfortably. I put up with that if I'm getting tools.

I'll take my SAK with tools, please.

To me, the whole point of a SAK is, that it is a small minimalistic tool kit to give me some options. If I just want a knife with a single blade, I'll just carry an Opinel or Buck knife. A SAK is more than just a knife, it's a solution to those little problems life has a habit of throwing our way.

The tools are the only reason I have a SAK in the first place. I entertained the idea of a single bladed SAK, but then in my mind a SAK wouldn't be a SAK w/o the tools.

I carry a single bladed knife with me as edc anyway in addition to a SAK.

Currently, my edc SAKs are between a Small Tinker, Compact, or Climber in addition to my edc knives w/c are between a Delica Wave, RAT-1, or Small Bucklite MAX.

the most minimal SAKs to serve me well is bantam... a single knife with very2 useful combo tools and T&T...

less than that wouldnt worth pocket time for me.

I prefer my Swiss Army Knives have more than just a blade if i want a single bladed knife for edc i will dig out my one from my collection of single bladed lock blade knives.

If you removed the tools, the SAK quickly loses its competitive edge IMO. Lots of other better single blade knives.

I own a few. I have a pocket pal ( secretary with plastic scales ), a wenger patriot, and a victorinox cowboy. I have to admit that I don't really carry the cowboy. I have better knives that are easier to get to. I do like the pocket pal / secretary / patriot because they are among some of the thinnest pocket knives available. They are great for when I'm too dressed up to carry a bigger knife and they fit great in small kits... Like an altoids tin survival kit or a small firemaking kit... which is where those knives currently are... :)

If there was one tool on an SAK that I could do without it would be the blades as I already carry a dedicated one handed folder. I carry and SAK or MT for everything it provides but the blades.

If i'm looking for an ultra thin SAK, I just crab an Alox Cadet. Don't see the need for a single layer SAK, you lose too much utility imo.

The Vic Baker's knife is pretty neat for a single blade. But I carry an alox Rambler as well.
