Single Hilt, Double Hilt or No Hilt?

Which do you like more and why?
I love my Mad Dog ATAK, which has a single hilt. I also love my Dad's SOG Trident. The shape of the handle is a little (just a little) square, but the short double hilt is perfect for my forefinger and thumb placement and I can change hand positions quickly because it is a little handle heavy. I like that.
I am getting a Randall Made Special Fighter #1 (#16-7") from my fiancee and parents when I graduate MCRD. I had the option of a single hilt, but after handling the SOG's handle this last weekend, I changed it to a double hilt. The double hilt on the Randall's military made knives seems a little big to me, but that is my opinion.
I gave my brother a SOG SEAL 2K and he loves it. He carries it everywhere. He is still in high school and can't take it to class, but it is on his belt or in his waist line as soon as he gets to his truck. He says he like the lack of a hilt because he can choke up on the blade (he wears leather gloves).
What is your opinion?

Hi Crowing Horse...

From a sheath making standpoint on simplicity a single hilt is much easier to do. It can be done,,just a little more playing around to do on it...

From a personal standpoint,,depending on the size of the hilt,, and the knife it's on,, I prefer a single hilt as well...

Although the hilt on the new James Keating fighter is sweet,, and serves a very important purpose...

All and all I prefer a single,, especially on a Randall like the one you are thinking of getting...

Just my opinion though...

I'll take a double quillon anytime, especially if you're concidering a fighter!

Single hilt, as it provides easier placement of index finger or thumb on top of blade for utility use of knife. Most of my older knives have double hilts, but if I had it to do over again, they would be single.

Single hilt for sure, as I use tools and not weapons.

I like single. It's more than enough to keep your hand from sliding down the blade. Among it's other attributes, better utility grip, more comfortable in certain position of carry.

Double guards are really most important for defending against another knife. Let's face it, what are the chances of that?

Double gaurds are valuable on any knife you're gonna use to kill or fight something, and not only for defense.

Since your hand wraps all the way around the handle of a knife, a double gaurd keeps hte back part of the hand from slipping up during a powerful stab or thrust, and it also allows for a more powerful stab because more of your hand can brace against the gaurd so more power is transmitted into the target. This is why every pig sticker worth its salt and made by someone who has actualy used it to kill a real live boar in the traditional manner has a double gaurd. This is also why one of the best purpose-built stabbers of all time, the rondel dagger, had a large flat disk for a gaurd and pommel.

If your eye is mainly to utility, a single gaurd is probably the way to go.

Personaly, my fixed blade has to be able to serve as a fighter, pig sticker, and utility blade, and still be reasonably concealsble. A double gaurd works just fine for me.

As far as the likelihood of being in a knie-on-knife fight, as has been noted by others, your odds just went up astronomicaly by your carrying a knife for defense. Edged weapons are actualy pretty commonly encountered around here, it's the fight itself that tends to be uncommon, not the weapon.

Single quillion knives are more comfortable for daily use, for me. If you can't play nice with the other kids, use a suppressed firearm and stay out of arm's reach

Thanks for the replys. I ordered a double hilt on my Randall. After tooling with my Dad's SOG Trident this last weekend, I love hte idea of a double hilt on a fighter, especially if it has to be used as such. I may decide to "personalize" the knife by filing down or cutting down the hilt a little; the #1 hilt on Randall's seems a little big to me. I will see how it handles when I receive it. Thanks.
