Hi, has anyone tried the Sporthill (www.sporthill.com) brand of single layer winter outdoor clothing made from what they call 3SP? The blurb on the website says:

"3SP: The new alternative for layering! Now you can get all the benefits of layers: heat control, moisture management, and wind protection with only one layer of 3SP... 3SP will help you stay warm and dry in most winter conditions--even in the wind, rain, sleet and snow. That's because 3SP's unique fiber structure is windproof up to 35 mph yet still breathes, wicks and stretches. Stay out all day and head home warm and dry. Shed the layers and keep the warmth, only with 3SP, the first and largest selling single layer solution. 3SP is available ONLY in SportHill clothing."

The tops are $92 each in a brick and mortar shop and the trousers are $77, which seems to me outrageous. However I have not seen the equivalent anywhere else and they are pretty comfortable and give great freedom of movement. What I'd like to know is whether the claims hold up. Can anyone provide feedback or comments?

many thanks,
kmclye

Hmm... sounds like the waterproof hat that 'breathes'. The only garment I know of that meets that description grows on various animals: moose, elk, caribou, polar bear, etc.

Check out some of the Buffalo systems coldweather stuff.

I haven't got any - yet - but it does have a very good reputation.
Anything that can be worn outside/inside a wet down sleeping bag (they do inner and outer bags as well as clothing) give you a good nights sleep and dry the bag has to be OK.

Their technical fabric has been going since the 70s - a bit longer than sporthill's 1991... - and is used at the Antarctic and the Himalayas

As they say "Clothing and Sleeping Bags for the SERIOUS Outdoor Activist"

kmclye, what is desirable about single layer cwc? Why would you not want to layer?

You can spend a $hitload of money on "running clothes" or you can do what I do. I run in all weather, cold included. I live in PA and we do get some cold weather. I have a good gore-tex running suit, thats key, but underneath it, all you need to stay warm are a single layer of GI poly-pro underwear. The beige ones, sold in every army navy store, catalog company, etc.... The polypro undies wick the sweat away from next to your skin, and the gore tex allows it to evaporate, leaving you warm and much dryer than most fabrics under similar circumstances. They are cheap, work great, and "soldier proof" so they last.
