Okay, just for fun......What is your favorite axe and why?
I am talking about the axe you run to most, due to use, carrying, etc. I think this will make yet another cool thread, but i would mainly like to hear what you guys love the most, out of your collections for using. Thanks, I'll start.
So far, I have a Council Boys Axe, and a GB American Felling axe(curved handle). These are my first two axes so far. I love the GB for taking down larger trees and of course for splitting, but as far as carrying into the woods for camping, I love the boys axe. I use it all the time at home too, when i don't feel like taking out the bigger one, and the size and weight of the boys axe, although a bit small for real serious work I guess, is just the perfect feel, size, and weight for carrying and using for anything other than HUGE rounds.

Its funny, i used to swing a 10 lb sledge at work beating truck tire rims, but that is more or less straight down. For axe use, where I seem to need to be able to swing at all sorts of angles(not just down to the ground), i seem to really like these axe sizes, and I don't know if I would really go too much larger than the American Felling axe. But, again, thats just me. I gotta get some pics up too, i just took down a whole tree, maybe like 18 inch diameter, because it fell on my shed, and I used the GB for most of it. Well, used the chainsaw to give myself some perfect nice flat rounds to chop with the axe, and went real quick like that, but i think i should have used the axe for the whole thing......Oh well, got tons of more downed trees, so pics soon!

How about you guys???

Lately I've been really enjoying my old Kelly True Temper double bit. It's a 3.5 lb western pattern with nice slim cheeks. Great chopper. My go-to piece for work (wilderness trail clearing).

If I were going to fall trees on a regular basis with an axe it would be a double bit. But god smiled on loggers back in the 50's and gave them the chainsaw. For every tree I've dropped with an axe, I've dropped 500 hundred with a Stihl. A single bit is handier for all round woods use.

I prefer a single bit because the hammer head on the back is useful. This is mainly because i am not felling trees. Im doing lite chopping/i find the hammer head useful in some cases. Lately my got too axe has been my cold steel trail hawk. Ya ya, some dont count it as an axe (truly it is. It is designed after a Gouhl throwing axe). But ya my go to is the cold steel trail hawk :D

I like both. If I could have just one it would be a DBL bit. But since I have a few I choose a single bit with a curved handle most of the time.

My favorite is a 3-1/2 pound Marshall-Wells SB on a 34" curved handle. It's good steel and a marvelous vintage handle that feels terrific in my hands. But it's not my most used.

For car camping and light work I have a vintage Collins boy's axe. Great weight, length, feel, everything. I love that axe. But it's not my most used.

For splitting I use a 5 pound Plumb rafting axe. It has very hard steel and busts the heck out of knots without chipping or rolling. But it's not my most used.

My most used axe is my FSS Pulaski. It's with me every day when I'm doing trail work. Great chopper. I keep axe bit out of the dirt. We've always got some old beater Pulaski's around for when you just have to chop a root.
