This is a bigger, badder version of a new chopper I recently finished that was dubbed "sinister". I think the name is fitting so it stuck. This one is made from 1/4" 5160, it is 12.5" oal, w/ a 6.5" blade at 2.5" wide. I attached High density stall mat on the handle via 1/4" allen bolts tapped into the tang and a stainless tong tube. This thing is pure utility! Hope you like it. :D

Nice blade! How's the grip and durability of the stall mat? No offense, but it looks difficult to "finish". The lanyard hole isn't perfectly flush, due to the small holes withing the rubber.

I was considering doing my Ontario machete handle with some stall mat. Do you think that flared tubes would work, or is the rubber too soft.

Thanks for any time and info, I've only seen what was at Tractor Supply, and a 4'x6' mat might be a bit big for one knife.

Stall mat definitely won't win any beauty contests, But it is probably the most comfortable handle material ever! I actually recessed the thong tubing on purpose, because the mat is fairly soft I didn't want it to dig into your hand. I did flare the tube as well, you can see it pretty well in the second to last picture. As far as durability goes, I'm assuming since it was designed for horses to walk on it should wear pretty well, I know several other makers that use the stuff on competition knives. but this is my first knife with the stuff. Let me know how much mat you need and I will send you a couple chunks if you are willing to pay for shipping ,I did buy the whole mat! :)

choppers ARE fun!
and that thing is just retarded

What a beast! Looks like a very tough knife and would take a lot of abuse. I like it.

Never owned a blade with a 'stall mat' handle. I favor the idea though as this would minimize stress on the wrist during chopping motions etc. Wonder how the stuff compares to Res C? I have been using my Regulator as of late and have come to love the grip. It could be that it just has the right proportions for my hand...others have complained that this same handle is a bit on the thick side. I was contemplating what a Basic 9 would feel like with a Regulator handle. To me, hanldes are VERY important in the sense that a bad feeling grip causes me to put the knife down. Some knives just feel right! Always liked the CS Kukri blade for bush work but the handle had some serious hot spots. No wonder I have three sets of soft gloves in the bug-out bag. Nothing like blisters and a stinging hand to ruin a perfectly great outing.

By any stroke of the imagination, you have a very nice knife there. It reminds me of the Browning XD series and looks like it could go to hades and back with nary a blink.

Congratulations for your beast.
It reminds me of one (Much thinner: 2mm, but longer) I've been working on this week, ready for HT.

Nice chopper!

Jaygoliath I see you in the strangest places ..lol.
