I'm finishing my first french chef knife for a wedding present (tomorrow!), and am wondering what to use to finish the handle. I've tried tung oil, and super glue both with good results, but havent really tested them in a kitchen environment (ie soaking in a sink overnight etc.). I'm curious to try carnuba wax, but havent found any yet. How about paste wax (ie butcers wax or other brand of same? Any feedback would be GREATLY appreciated (the sooner the better) I'm going to try and finish this thing tonight when I get home from work.
Thanks,

Super glue wouldn't have any problem with water, it's acrylic. Any kind of wax wouldn't hold up well to heat, such as hot water, dishwasher, or leaving too close to the stove. What kind of handle did you put on it?

If the knife will be washed carefully with no more than brief dipping in a sink waxes and oils may work. Unfortunately a gift recipient is likely not to be as careful as you would wish. The worst case scenario is that the knife will go into a dishwasher. Hot dishwasher detergent will eventually wreck almost anything.

The toughest finishes I know of are the urethanes. You know, the stuff they use on hardwood floors and wooden boats. You can find them at hardware stores, wood worker stores, marine supply stores, or unfinished furniture stores. I've got urethane on my oak dining room table to protect against kids and hot dishes.
