Hello all, I went for a hike with a few friends today in Sipsey Wilderness area in the Bankhead Nat Forest.

The temps today were nothing short of perfect, hovering around 60 degrees in the canyon. It has been relatively cold here and froze the ice on most of the streams that feed the Sipsey river.

We took route 209 and had to cross this shallow area. The water was very cold!

After we crossed, we had some tea to warm up and then continued on.

I love the way the tree formed a circle of ice around the trunk. It looked like a sauna.

These pictures really show the color of the water. It was a jade color and was amazing looking with the back drop of the evergreen trees.

Ice is always something worth looking at. Always amazes me how many times you can say wow at the different scenes it can show.

Thanks for the comments all.

Beautiful pics. Where in Alabama is it? My dad's from down near the Gulf and he hadn't heard of it.
Its just South of the city of Moulten and North of Double Springs on highway 33. It goes pretty far west too and includes some awesome camping in the summer on Lake Smith.
Dismal Canons is also an excellent hiking spot but is on private land and they charge a decent amount to hike (which I hate).
Sipsey is free to hike and has 4 or 5 different camp grounds. You can camp on the banks of the sipsey river too, but its first come first serve.

Cool thanks for the info. I'll definitely look you up if I get down there before you move. That's a fine area you're moving to also.

that looks pretty nice. it reminds me a bit of dundas valley near Hamilton Ontario. i went with my GF a few weeks ago, before Christmas, to look at the river (no short sleeves after september though lol). if you are ever in canada come and see it.

Great pics...Chances are slim ill ever be in Alabama, so thanks for posting and giving me a chance to to see what its like!

That goes to all of you guys posting pics from your region..keep them coming!

I love the Sipsey! I have been there many times. I love going to the "big tree." It is hard to believe there are trees that large in Alabama. There are not many places like the Spispey left anymore. Looks like great fun, thanks for the pics!
