Took my new sirupate out to the Sierra's this weekend. Its probably the most useful knife I have ever used! It splits wood, it batons, whittles, limbs large branches & small trees, works as a hammer (on spine, plus it cuts like a razor-blade taped to a hammer), could probably decapitate a cougar... and holds a great edge even after a hard day's work! Oh ya and I could probably use it as a signaling mirror! Oh and don't even get me started on the karda! its pretty awesome too. whittled all sorts of things with it.
I have no idea how to sharpen the blade of the siru with that dull knife thing... (what is it a chakmak or something?) but id does spark well. Also I can activate my miller lite with that activation tab on it :D.
I was almost afraid use the blade tho. It is a work of art! and the traditional horn handle does take some getting used to but after a while it feels like an extension of my arm. My "Chukuri" that I bought from EGKH is like a junkyard tool compared to this sirupate. I was told that it was made by Dil. He is truly a master. Here are some pics that someone else took.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270971488566&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:US:1123 I will post some personal pics soon... CONVEX GRIND!

I promise that next time i get a blade it will be from Yangdu and not ebay.

I agree that the sirupate is the most practical design out of the 8 or 9 Kukuris that I got from H.I. thus far. Thanks for a great review.

Derek, thanks for giving that Sirupati a good home. She's a beaut! I have a 15" Horn handled one like yours and a 20" Wood handled one. The 15" is my Bump in the night blade right now and Shaving sharp! Might go backpacking a bit with me this summer. If you are looking for a big chopper a GRS or AK is the way to go, that or a larger ASTK. Those can chop pretty good too. :)

If you ever want to get into truly Big/Huge choppers, ask about Godzilla. ;)

What is godzilla?????

I'm not sure what a Godzilla is referring to either but you have a real nice Sirupate Derek. Of all the blades I have from Himalayan Imports the Sirupate is my favorite. Like you said it is so useful and versatile. You can do bushcraft, foodcraft, and fightcraft with it. I hike and camp with it, a 4 inch fixed knife, a Swiss Army knife, and a folding saw. Perfect!

Above: 18" Sirupate is in the middle.

Godzilla is a 25" long 5 pound Ang Khola that I special ordered back in 2001. From Uncle Bill I heared about a customer who ordered a Huge Ang Khola and being 6'5" I figured that it sounded good for my size so placed an order. The day before my Giant Ang Khola arrived I had seen the newer Godzilla movie for the first time. When I pulled him from the box, the name Godzilla just jumped out at me and it stuck. I took pictures and wrote reviews. This was the begining of a Huge Khukri feeding frenzy. For a few years people couldn't get enough of Huge Khukris. Had to sell him some years ago to pay for some college expences. Thank goodness a friend bought him. When ever the friend comes over for a visit or campout he brings Godzilla with him for a small family reunion. :) Godzilla brings a smile to most anyones face when they hold and use him. :D

I've had lots of Khukri's over the years and played with even more. Right now my go to blades are my 20" Sirupati (Lisa) and my 16.5" WWII. Though my 18" WWII is starting to take the place of the 16.5" model. This Spring I've been working to lower the weight of my Day hike and Backpacking load outs. The weight savings allows me to bring my 18" WWII if I want to and still have less weight on my hips. :) IMO A good all around Khukri. Though my favorite Khukri still is Lisa.

wow a 5 lb chopper? That is like an executioner's khukri! After doing a bit of research I think I want a WWI style khuk. PS my karda almost replaces my benchmade 710 when im in the wilderness.

It's a beast and a hand full but a great user. The Karda's sure are useful. My Kumar Karda's should be seeing lots of use this summer.

Good name! :)

lol it's the tip that I was trying to be careful about! Pun intended hahaha!

That is a very large blade. Thanks for clearing that up.

Rosie is a good name. Just a tip, never name a big knife Lorena ;).

ps. Can I maintain a convex grind with a tiny stone? or do i have to do some funky mousepad and sandpaper trick? I think my chakma is too soft... I tried using the back of my spyderco police model and it gave it a decent edge but still not razor sharp.

Derek-You should be able to maintain a convex with a small stone-I would suggest working from the spine side toward the edge when honing in this manner, that way you can place the blade side or tip on a workbench while holding the handle and moving the stone-easier and generally safer when the blade is much larger than the sharpening implement.BTW-I like the talk of naming blades-I think I will call my Super CAK "blockhead". :D

A Chakma is like a Butchers steel, designed to realign and touch up an edge in the field. This keeps the Blade usable longer between sharpenings. In the field I use a Chakma, diamond hone, or Butchers steel. At home when an edge needs a work over I use my 1x30 belt sander and the Butchers steel. My 12" AK and 15" Sirupati are sharp enough to shave with now :D because I worked them over a week ago with the belt sander and butchers steel.

Before I got the belt sander I used a large sharpening stone, sand paper and a hone or steel. They sure work but the sander is faster. ;)
