Way back in the back of my mind...I'm remembering that there are restrictions on OC spray in California.

What about pepper sprays?

My Sis-In-Law is in need of one...:(

That seems to be a legal question so let's try the Knife Laws forum. (The guys there are good at researching laws even if they are not exactly about knives.)

After you get the legal question answered you might want to look at Practical Tactical for other kinds of info.

Thanks, Cougar...hope I can get some direction soon.

pepper spray and oc spray are the same. oc, or oleoresin capsicum is the active ingredient and is derived from habanero (i think) peppers. any adult may carry, i believe classes are available, but not necessary.

You can buy pepper spray at just about any liquor store where I live.

Daniel Koster , if I may. Make sure your Sister in law, is capable of actually using a self defense device like that when the moment comes , any hesiation can result in her device being turned on her (which can happen to any of us).
Just having the device brings peace of mind but if we are unwilling to use it even for a split second that could cost us dearly.
The class , sounds like a good idea since they usually mentally empower the students.

I'm sending her two cannisters - she's had several "earfuls" already and seems like she understands the "when" and "how" of using it - anyway, I'm going to have her empty out the one container as practice.

I carry the stuff myself and am completely aware of how/when to use it and what it does, etc. I feel pretty good about the instruction I've given her.

Just needed to know a good brand and wanted to make sure I abided by any restrictions in CA.

Thanks, guys!

I don't know about Commiefornia law, but I use "Freeze +P." Only get the version that comes out in a stream. The sprays can bite you, especially in the wind.

i agree, stream is better. more precise and generally more accurate. i carry deftec mk3, seems to be pretty effective.
