Any opinion on this one?

jppeltonensissipuukko.jpg

I have it for a while and this is a great knife.
6"x15/16"x0.22"(7/32")
Perfect cutter with very ergonomical handle. Only cons. I can imagine - does not catch eyes! Really with everything else almost perfect - it just does not look attractive!

Thanks, Vassil

A rubber handle and a leather sheath -- a strange combination! But it really is a great knife, and astonishingly sharp. The grip is excellent and that sheath is very flexible: you can wear it hanging or snugged up to your belt or horizontally.

Not having had any work as an assassin lately, I've been using mine as a bread knife. :D

The smith that forges them is nice man to boot. Basically m-95 is designed by one man and another man (the smith I talked with) forges the blades with power hammer and the finishes the blades with ginder. I didn't ask about handle of sheat making. He makes blades for M-95 two days a week (at least two years ago) and the rest of time he works as smith. He makes affordable custom puukkos and other ironworks.

Tommi,
Does he have a link, and could you post it, please?

Thanks,
Bill

From the Kellam Knives website:

The Ranger Puukko was designed by Captain J.P. Peltonen and heavily tested and approved by Nordic, US and UN troops. The hand forged Teflon coated blade is an impressive 5mm in thickness.

6" RAZOR SHARP TEFLON COATED BLADE
FORGED CARBON STEEL
5" TEMPERED RUBBER HANDLE
FULL TANG DESIGN
INNOVATIVE LOCKING SHEATH
STRONG 3MM LEATHER
PROTECTIVE INNER LINER
OPTIONAL DIAMOND SHARPENER

More information at finnen-messer - Die Entwicklung des "Sissipuukko M.95" is detailed but in German.

Heh. On the detail page it says that the steel is 0.6% carbon.
No other information on the contents, but it says that the RC varies from 45 to 58! Does that require an unusual heat treat, or is that typical for a good custom?

This is zone tempered (I hope this is right term). And for 85 eur (it was 75 when I bought it year ago) it is great!
Do you know what exact steel they use?
What is "Kohlenstoffanteil"? This is probably steel made by Kehler - german carbon steel, but what composition is? And they have new sheath.

Thanks, Vassili

I have had one for some while, it is by design heavy , strong and ( :D ) military oriented. A good HD knife but a bit heavy for my taste and my usual way of utilizing knives.

The sheath holds the knife quite securely but is otherwise a bit cumbersome. Hmm.. I seem to sound negative its not bad, just not to my taste really after this trial period.

Interesting, I find it very light for knife this size. I compare it to same anymals - KaBar 1227, SOG Navy Seal 2000 etc.
Thanks, Vassili.

I bet that "Sissi" knife would make a great wedding gift for couples tying the knot in Massachusetts. :D

Sorry, I couldn't resist.......

Hi Tommi,

Do you know what steel is it made from?
Problem is that there are no info on this knife on the web.

Hi WilliePete,

I know place where they sell it for resonable price:
http://www.brisa.fi/sissi.html
http://www.brisa.fi -> then go to tab "Knives for Sale"

Thanks, Vassili.

Brisa says that they DO ship to the USA--just 10 euros regardless of weight.
That's $114 shipped to the USA for the Ranger Pukko -- much less than the $150 or so that most dealers have it for.

Spasibo Bolshoe Nozh2002!

You are right. It is not a pretty knife but so long as it works well, who cares! :D :)

Pojaluysta! I bought it a year ago from Dennis Holmbaka (brisa.fi) and it takes $10 and about 2 weeks to CA and I bought it for 75 euro and it was time when euro cost less the dollar.

The name is my faivorite part - I think this is really funny.

Thanks, Vassili

You can find an article/review about this knife in the March 2000 issue of TK too.

I picked mine up at the Finn PX for 35e, while in BiH. I carried it on my trouser belt with the sheath tucked into my pocket. It takes an edge quickly on a sharpmaker and holds it pretty well. I used it for notching wood, cutting plastic bottles and aluminum cans, prying open weapons boxes, and cutting lead and wires seals. I am really impressed with these knives. I also used it while on duty during Isabell. The salt from the bay left some rust on the edge but it cleaned up well. It is almost dainty compared to some of my knives but it holds up to everything I throw at it.

Damn now I have to dig it out put it back in my kit. 8^)

You'll find some (small) pics if you try the next to links

Galleria -> tuotteita
Tuotekuvia -> puukot

The steel he uses in his own puukkos is (IIRC) Böhler K990 or his own damascus.
M-95 steel is somewhat simple carbonsteel with 0,6% C (and some extra)
