I recently acquired this aluminium-handled advertising knife. The company produced paint, varnish etc.
A search lead me to this link for Sissons bros. http://www.paul-gibson.com/history/paint-industry.php. I enjoyed the historical connection and learning something new as a result of this knife. The information in the link is somewhat esoteric, but hopefully will be of interest to others here.

I admit it's not really "for me"...but I have great appreciation for the people (like you) who dig down under history and knives. This one is surely interesting, as the story behind it. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the detective work.

I'm very impressed by the QUALITY of that advertising knife, looks like high relief strike and very aesthetic too. As a side note, due to the obvious quality of the work, was aluminium at that time a costly metal? Not very common at that time I would've thought.

Thanks, Will

Having spent a fair number of years as a paint chemist (everything from barn paint to specialty paints for unusual airplanes), I found that a very fun read. I never formulated with boiled linseed oil as a paint resin, nor with white lead as an opacity pigment, but I've read about them. And when I was a young fella, some of my teachers were old enough that they had used them.

THANKS!

Yes, aluminum was considered way more precious back then.
Thanks for posting the history! :)
