Hello all!

This is my first topic post and wanted to say thank you all for a wonderful experience and vast knowledge you have lended. I have been browsing the site for some time and have learned a great deal. I have been collecting for a few years now and have built quite a collection thus far. Still waiting on a chance for a Hinderer, the holy grail. Anyways, back to topic.

My sister is getting married. I thought what better gift than a Knife that would outlast most marriages. My sis is into Bushcrafting, she lives in and enjoys the outdoors. There are so many options out there that I thought what better way to spark a topic and get some input.

She currently carries a Mora that she absolutely loves. My goal is to replace that with something a bit more beefy. I think the $150-$250 range is a good point. A few I have been kicking around are:

Benchmade Bushcrafter
Fallkniven F1
ESEE 5 - I have the 4 and absolutely love it
BRK Aurora or Bushcrafter

Anyways, that's what I have come up with. I think I'm leaning towards the BRK or Fallkniven, just wanted some input first. Please let me know what you think, what your experience has been or just your opinions.

Thanks in advance!!!

I would check out the knifemaker's market here. There are plenty of guys making very nice fixed blades in your price range. It would also be a little bit more of a special gift than a production knife, IMO.

I have the Benchmade 162 Bushcrafter and love. Nice thick spine, no worries if batoning.

Maybe something that includes two knives? Kind of like his and hers. Hopefully being outdoors is something that they enjoy doing together. Just a thought...

She loves her Mora cuz it's a GREAT knife! What about some other gear......a small forest axe or equivalent?

For the upper limit of your budget, I'd recommend a knife from Fiddleback Forge.

Look at his page here in the Knifemakers forum... You're crazy if they don't blow you away. It's a combination of beauty and utility that she'd be certain to appreciate.

In my opinion, these knives are the kind you use every time you're out of doors and pass down to your children.

You all are great, thank you.

I never really thought about an Axe, that's a great idea. Also, the matching set is pretty intriguing.

I agree that a Custom Fixed from a maker here is the way to go, something special and unique.

Thanks for all the responses, this is exactly what I was looking for.

Now those are beautiful, exactly what I was looking for.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but shouldn't a wedding gift be for both of them? You could get them a his and hers set and have them etched or engraved.

Just don't engrave one of my wife's favorite lines when she's mad at me: "Divorce in not an option, but murder is." :D

I'm sure you will find the right knife.

We used to give newly weds an AG Russell Woodstalker (great paring knife) and a honing stone to keep it sharp.

Fallknivens are very nice, often overlooked knives. Their pretty tough, even though they're VG-10. The convex edges are incredibly sharp, they have very good factory edges. The handles on the F1s are grippy, maybe too aggressive, though.

Crap you make this a hard decision as all 4 of those are good knives. Do not forget to check out Scrapyard and Swamp Rat knives.

It's a bit left of field but I think one of our member knifemakers KeithF has made an amazing wedding cake knife which is for sale.
There are always great knives on offer in the fixed blades for sale page in the knife makers area of the exchange.

Seriously consider a custom. Something that no one else has. In your price range you have a lot of options. Look at Fiddleback Forge, Fletcher Knives and Dogwood Custom Knives. All great makers who would be happy and proud to work with you!

Fixed blades and folders are inherently different in price and custom makers area. If your sister is into fixed blades and bushcraft, I would 100% encourage you to look at custom makers- both local and through bladeforums. It may not necessarily be the highest performing knife on the market, you can still find something that provides exceptional performance. If there is a handle material that means something to you via family heirlooms, trees in the backyard growing up, or literally anything of significance you can specify that. Likewise with bladeshape and maybe even steel. Also, I would not miss the opportunity to have a custom tooled leather sheath made. If it were me, I'd try to go as personal and special as possible without sacrificing quality. But neither would I give up personalization for microscopic performance improvement.

While I can't speak from DIRECT use, a friend of mine got a "bushfinger" model a few months back and I was able to handle it. I was and still am today blown away by the fit and finish of that piece.

Fiddleback Forge is what you're looking for.

Edit: I searched some more for you:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1130951-Fiddle-Black-Friday-11-29-13

about a little over halfway down the first page, you'll see a white scaled one.

2013 1129 014 – Recluse, Bone White Linen micarta over natural canvas with a lime green g10 pinstripe, SFT Tang, Convex on 1/8” thick 3D Spalted 01 toolsteel - $255

What better than white for a wedding, eh?
