This bits the big one. My girlfriend's shopping list for X'mas includes 6 steak knives a piece for her brother and sister, a letter opener for her brother's birthday ( Dec. 23th) and a carving set her aunt and uncle. I took a vacation week to accomplish these tasks. All the blades are completed before hand, just can't get into doing the handles.

I feel for ya George. Know exactly where you're coming from. Relative knives can bite the big one on a regular basis. Not very profitable either. THe best advice is just do it and get it over with. Put it behind you and move on. Yer in my prayers. Also, drink corn liquor all day before starting on it. (This also works for snake bites)

Actually, if she has you making gifts. Then you must be making some good knives.
Hey George, put me down for a bowie with a red and green sheath!

I would offer to help, but I will only be home for a few days at turkey day for break, and I have about 12 blades of my own to grind...

George, pack up the blades with a set of cutler's rivets and handle material and give them as kits!

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

I love L6's idea, it would give them a little better appreciation for what you do as well.

Been there.
Go out and buy some new wood you have been wanting to try or something to get your interist up.I go out to the shop to work on relatives projects and end up doing something else. If you find an answer post it we all need help.

Hoaaah, doing handles is boring. I don't grind, but forge my blades and always feel the urge to forge and forge some more. And sometimes i end up with a year's stock or more of forged blades without any drive to my shop to make handles.
And the other forumites are right. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and go through and forget it afterwards. The problem is that if you do a good job, even more relatives will show up to get more cheap first-class custom knives.

For every hour of my time, my friends and relatives have to pay me with an hour of their time. Or pay full price. And I'm getting better at just saying no.

L6:
I like the idea of the kits. The only problem is, they would be over here using my equipment. It's bad enough I have to see them on holidays. ( Boy! I glad my girlfriend doesn't follow this forum & Joe no ratting me out.)

Hmmm.. You are in Mass?? Not far from me when I am home in Central CT for Break!! I like grinding metal better, but the handles are always fun for me. I try to make the handle fill the hand, look nice and feel even better than it looks. I think it is pretty challenging and fun to deisgn your own handle custom fitted to your hand.

i always use up odds & ends of handle material or stuff i just desided it did,nt finish up the way i want my knives to look. that part feels good to get it out of the shop, beside's that help you get out of making matching knives later. sorry honey, don,t have any more of that material to make them another knife to match the set. hehe
