That 21" Gelbu Special is a tremendous deal at $118. Most of the time a blade like that by Kumar would go for twice as much, and it's a great addition to any collection, or for daily use.

I have one very similar by Tirtha. It's an excellent, multipurpose length and weight combination.

Howdy folks,

Not sure any of these are the exact khuk I need next but I have a few questions... What is a Balance Knife, any characteristics beyond being small/medium size & weight and more curved than average? Next, Ram Kumar and Kumar are not the same kami? Last, what is the typical weight of a Reti? Are they always about 1/2oz per inch?

Thanks, Doug

3. I have several HI Reti knives. The weights range from 1/2 oz per inch to 1 oz per inch (approximately).

2. Kumar and Ram Kumar are two different kamis. Kumar has been with HI a lot longer, and at least two HI models (Kumar Kobra and Kumar Karda) are named after him. That's not a negative reflection on Ram Kumar, since Nepal has many highly skilled, experienced kamis and HI recruits the best of them.

1. I'm not sure that a Balance Knife is a well defined model. What they have in common, and evidently the source of the name, is that the balance point of the knife (the "center of gravity," in physics terminology) is midway between the butt and the tip. Apart from that, I think "balance knife" is a catch-all term for HI khukuris that don't quite match any of the standard models. If anyone knows better I will happily bow to superior knowledge. :)
