A friend of mine from Montana (north of Missoula) recently found an old splitting wedge bearing a six-pointed star trademark, about the size of a dime. Historical records suggest that the area was heavily logged around 1914. Any thoughts on what company might have manufactured such a wedge?

Thanks for your input,

Dave

Iron City Tools. They mostly made quarry and rail equipment, but made splitting wedges etc. There was one at my family's camp that was badly mushroomed so I took it home to grind down, and it turned out it had a hardened cap forge-welded onto it with a void underneath. Ended up having to cut off the top entirely to get past the gap. Quite unusual and I've never come across anything else like it.
