Size comparison scans-Mil, Cal, Shab

There was an earlier thread that asked about comparing the Military and the full size Calypso. I answered as well as I could but the one thing you can't describe as well with words as pictures is relative size. I threw in a Shabaria as well because it shows how small a package can be and still have a full size blade. The first scan shows all three closed. They are lined up on one side. The second shows them all open. They are lined up on the blade tips. The Military is a big package which is nice when you are using it but not quite so nice when you are carrying it. The other thing the scan doesn't show is thickness. The Military is much thicker than the Calypso. None of this means the Military isn't a great knife; it is! I carry it all the time. But every design has good and bad points.

Thanks for the scans -- they are most enlightening.

I am now inclined towards getting the Military (plain edge) as my primary workhorse knife, and also to getting a Calypso Jr. Lightweight (serrated) as a backup, and as an alternative when I need a smaller lighter package.

Thanks again,

Carlos

Nice scans Gregg. Interesting that they all have the same size blade.

Carlos - Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

The Military is a good "workhorse". That's what it was designed and built to be. It Probably won't win any "beauty contests".

Thanks Sal!

Yes, the Military is a great knife. I started thinking about it last night: if I could only have on Spyderco what would it be? For me, I don't think there is any possible answer except the serrated Military. It's a great knife. I just try to contain my enthusiasm a little with people who haven't handled one. I want to make sure they understand that it isn't a knife for casual carry. But if it had a shortner or slimmer handle it wouldn't be as good a knife when you were trying to really bear down and cut something tough.
I do love both the others in the scans though. I bought the full size Calypso when you announced it was being discontinued. It is such a flat slim knife and when you snap that blade open people's eyes usually widen. It is so sharp that it would a great defensive knife if need be. And then there's the Shabaria. After looking at those scans it seems like you could market it as having a "cutaway" or "skeletonized" handle. "It has just enough handle to cover the blade in the closed position." But then the flared butt acts as a retainer like the butt on the Civilian. The double steel liners make it tough and that point on the butt would make a heck of a weapon on its own. And the blade is so sharp and so useful. It has become my "automatic choice" knife when I have to cut open some cardboard box with lots of tape (like those boxes Bill Martino sends out from HI). Great job on all three!
