I hadn't realized there was a size difference between the flipper and non-flipper XM-18. So imagine my surprise when I lined up my two 3.5" XM-18's and snapped the photo:

The difference is pretty substantial - mostly in the handle as the blade lengths are darn close. I wonder why?

Now set them on top of each other. Or just swap them. I find the bottom knife always looks longer. Optical illusions and all.

I think that the nonflipper handle is longer by at least 1/4". Although, as Capbyrd said, the photo is "biased" toward the bottom folder.

Rolex John, you probably already know this, but... if you've got time, take two pictures (one of each knife), same angle shots- head on and position knives in same location and then superimpose the images on top of each other. Of course adjusting the blending mode- that should make for a visually clearer depiction of the size comparison.

Hey Rollie, now that some time has passed you should post again to clarify findings. We know they are the same, were you just playing a bit?

Uhm...ever heard of a tape measure?

Waaay too simple. Ok we need to know the lens mm, the sensor size, approach angle of the shot, distance to the targets and their distance apart. Then we can calculate their sizes using minutes of angle. Oh and time of day, lat/long, lunar phase, altitude, barometer, and stellar alignment.
