For all those who look down on 12" khukris heres a little something I carved out with a 12" AK.

Its a spear scabbard carved outa mahagonny. I put a mahagonny board underneath to give some perspective of what the little mighy max tackled. The scabbard is not finished, but well you get the idea.

Nice looking job Federico.:)
The little ones definitely have their place. Tsimi is just a khukuri size snob. And if it wasn't Tsimi it might be someone worse. (Is that even possible?):D

How long did it take you to do the spear scabbard? Did you use the khuk as a draw knife at any time during the carving?
Is the scabbard split or two pieces of board?

Well the khuk actually was a last minute change. I originally planned on using a jig saw and sander to shape the sheath, but I found out that my jig saw blade was completely destroyed (dont know what happened since when I last used it the blade was fine but when I picked it up this morning all the teeth were gone from the blade) and wouldnt even cut into the wood, and that I lacked any decent belts for my sander. This scabbard is actually only meant for storage while shipping so the spear doesnt tear through the box, though with more work it could be made nice (it was scrap mahagony that I didnt think had any decent grain structure but after making it I found a beautiful grain hiding beneath and I wish I could spend more time on the scabbard to properly beautify it). Well long story short I used the khuk to chop out the shape (many controlled chops), then once shaped and thinned (again with the khuk) I used the curve as a draw knife to refine the curved surface, then as a scraper to ease sanding. The board was cut into two and routed out with a dremel and then cleaned out with the khuk to insure good fit of the spear. So all in all it took me about 1 hour with the khuk to get it to the shape you see.

What kind of tool does one use to scoop out the insides?

If you could, post more pics as you get further on with the project. :) I'm nosy. :D

I used a dremel to roughly route out the inside, and the khuk clean it up. Unfortunately due to time constraints thisll probably be the most done it gets. I slapped a quick coat of oil on it, then Im just gonna tie er down with twine and ship. Ill take a pic before I ship it out. Realistically this aint a scabbard for show, just a golorified shipping box, so there wont be any fancy embellishments. I made it to protect a spear that I was working on for a friend when I ship it to him. The darn thing is now really really sharp, and I feared it would just punch through the box despite whatever materials I packed in there. So I made the scabbard out scrap mahagony I had lying around. If I had more time, and more money Id put either a chased silver chape and collar on it, or do a rattan wrap. But since I gotta ship tommorow, twine is whats gonna have to be.

Well as Bruise asked here are two more pics of the scabbard along with the spear that goes with it. If you cant make it out, the tang of the spear is sticking out of the scabbard.

The scabbard is held together by some jute twine I had lying around. Like I said before its crude, but I figure itll keep the spear safe for flight. If I had more time and the money fancy it up, but well this spear has gotta fly. :D
