Thanks to thatmguy I finally got my first piece of Busse. (Got to be careful typing that) First impression is that it is bigger than I thought. Before I recieved the knife I was a little afraid it was going to be too small but it turned out to be just right. It is wider than a K-Bar but about the same overall length. The blade thickness is the same but handles are much thinner on the SJT.

I think I would prefer the magnum handles even though I have small hands. It would just fill the hands a little better. Also, the canvas handles are not as rough as I feared but still provide good traction. The finger choil is a great feature as it adds a lot of control to the knife. The black knife coating is growing on me.

My dislikes are really nitpicking. I'm comparing the fit and finish to my only other expensive knife, a David Winston, which is probably not fair. The Winston is much better finished overall and sharper. There is very slight gap between parts of the handle of the SJT. Also, the knife is not as sharp as the Winston when first recieved but is serviceable. I'm sure it can be touched up and the gap is not large or distracting. Also, my K-Bar can be used to hammer in tent stakes due to a flat pommel. Not with a Busse. But I can use the Busse to cut out a branch to make a hammer a lot easier than with my K-Bar. Once again, these are very minor dislikes and most definitly not a deal breaker.

I haven't tried cutting anything yet so I can't talk about edge retention. From the many reports here I don't think that it will be a problem.

Overall the knife is just about perfect as a general use knife. Not to heavy, not to light. Many comfortable hand positions to hold the knife depending on use. I like using the finger choil to get the feel of a shorter knife with more control. Hold it a little farther back and it's a good chopper. I was looking at a CRK but Cliff Stamp's review and the praises sung here swayed my mind. I think I made the right choice.

Once again, Thanks thatmguy. The rest of you guys should also. He eliminated me as competition in the extravaganza. (That and I also ordered a crash-axe)

Mag slabs where not made available in the TAC configuration to my recollection, so the only way to get a larger grip would be to find and buy a HOGSJTLE, which has a thicker blade, thus making the handle thicker.

I should clarify that I mean the if the mag handles were availeable it would be worth the upgrade. I still have the Hell Razor on my mind and was thinking of that when I wrote. Funny, I thought the purchase of the SJT would quench my desire for another knife. Here I am still wanting a Hell Razor and other Busses.

Uhem....

Be afraid....

While the Swamp Rats were my gateway knife to Busse, the SJT was the gateway knife to the HOGFSH... which is the knife I find myself comparing all others to these days...

Be very afraid... :D

I'm afraid I will feel the same way about the HOFBM... 3/8'' spine is going to kill me... I better start working out now. :D

It went something like this for me.

SR order was too long coming, so I ventured over to the INFI side.

Coated blades gave way to shinier ones. (They'll pry my satin SJTAC-LE out of my cold, dead hands.)

Now, I am looking at older Busses on the aftermarket and thinking about customs.

Be very afraid. :D

Yep- that sounds about right. Soon you will know that you really need to get both- and anything else you can find around the same size, like the older model Satin Jack, and as you already noted, a Hell Raiser, and don't forget to try a HOGSJTLE, because you really need to compare them all and find out which you like best.

Then, depending on your personality, you'll either decide you need to try some Infi in a little bigger blade (Steel Heart, and don't forget all the talk about the Battle Mistress coming soon) or a little smaller, EDC type blade (Meaner Street, Active Duty, and a list that just seems to keep growing- Wardens, anyone?)

It really doesn't matter whether you go bigger or smaller first, because you'll soon feel the need to have AT LEAST TWO OF EVERYTHING! Oh- did I mention that there's variants?

Uhem....

Be afraid....

Be very afraid.

Yeah, be warned. Bad ju-ju just to look at these forum pages, Mike. -- Especially if you already like and use knives. I wandered by here about 1 1/2 months ago and have bought and traded about 1/2 dozen knives from forum members, and a couple from Busse, including Skunk's "full moon" GW last night(all transactions went absolutely smoothly, btw). Also, a couple items on order.

I'm too dumb to be afraid, I guess.

My RatMastiff was the same way. I was thinking that either the slabs weren't fastened on as tight as they could have been. OR, the textured coating underneath the scales were making a slightly uneven surface, meaning that the slabs weren't sitting perfectly flush with the tang. What ever the case may be, it didn't detract from the overall quality (and value) of the knife, IMHO.

For what it's worth, the scales on my new M6 are flawless in every way. They lay down tight with NO gaps, and are perfectly aligned with the tang on both sides.. Woot! :D
