Sjamboks?

Has anyone ever tried double stick techniques using sjamboks? I have honestly never even held a sjambok, so I am not completely clear on its weight. But it seems to be perfect for fast techniques. Any insights from those with more experience would be appreciated.

Bandit:

First, do a search on Sjamboks. I know that their have been some posts on this, though I do not know that they cover the use of two simultaneously. I think that these are more whip-like so I'm not sure how that would factor into two unit technique.

Second, check out Don Rearic's site He's got an article on the Sjambok, not to mention that the rest of the stuff there is really cool.

Third, if all else fails, you might contact Don directly through his site.

Hope this helps,

Some of the guys at the Inosanto Academy, including Guro Dan, have experimented with Newt Livesay's WA-1(Whoop Ass 1) stick. It behaves somewhat like one of my friends' genuine African sjamboks. I have tried both the standard 30" and some custom 34" I had made by Newt. Newt now produces a factory 36" also.

I like the 30 inchers a little better for double stick techniques---probably because I'm just not used to something as long as 34" in each hand. I've also tried a 34" in the right hand and a 30" in the left. Feels a little more comfortable than two 34s.

A few of us have also played around with a WA-1 and various knives. We jokingly called it "Whoop Ass y Folda."

If you want something like a sjambok that is a lot less "whippy" than the Cold Steel items, try Newt's stuff. If you search the archives, you will find extensive discussion of the WA-1's devastating power.

D.W.K. - Don Rearics site Sjambok stuff is really good, I have been meaning to snag a couple of them for experimentation. The sleeve carry idea intrigues me................

The problem is with all the FMA/IMA gadgetry suddenly appearing in my abode, the wife will probably become a Overnite Guro with Sjamboks and I'll never get to try them, just tried on ME!.

I loaned Dave Fulton my homemade HillBilly version "WV-X" sticks for a week or so. He didn't manage to break them

Pete,

I know what you mean about being on the receiving end. I got a WA-1 for my boss. Within seconds, it had been "captured" by his extremely capable and beautiful assistant. As I walked by her desk later in the day, I took a sharp smack across the backside. I don't think she realized how much those things sting!

If she had been wearing some tall black boots and maybe a skimpy teddy, I would have let her smack me a couple more times----but NOT while she was wearing a business suit! And I know enough about sexual harassment law to avoid even joking about it.

I'll check Don's site as you recommend. Thanks very much.

Hey! As long as she did not have short, red hair, wear sexy little glasses and say, "You ARE theweakestlink...goodbye..." when she did it...all should be fine. [Love that Anne Robinson]

The thing I like about the Sjambok is...you can hit someone and you barely have to twitch using abanico. A half turn of the wrist or a little less when you get really good with one, projects the tip, and that can be directly into their face if need be. Good for walks.

Never held a sjambok but have the WA 1 and the Walkabout, both are mainly for thrusting drills then stick or bokken techniques. My instructor and students have banged them both in drills and against tires. The Walkabout has also tapped some parking meter shafts, the WA 1 ripping book pages and cracking AOL CDs.

The only criticism all of us had was the rough golf club handle material. The Walkabout's gray shaft particularly reminds me of a broken golf club.

I've gotten the small cap at the end of the WA 1 to fray a little and would like to remove it and sharpen the point. Like those little sticks used to pick up trash on the streets.

Don,

SJAMBANICO - OOOOOOOHHH I Like Dat!:D :D
How has the paracord wrap held up on the modified handles??

Smoke - Coat the WA-1 tips with Plasti-Grip (available at any good hardware Superstore). It comes in a variety of colors, including red! and is quite durable. Just dip the stick in the can and you have 5" of coverage.
I used two layers on my "WV-X" sticks and it has yet to wear off after quite a bit of tire dummy usage.

I re-wrapped a couple weeks ago simply because I wanted to, but I did it tighter! They have held up fine. You have to drill an extra hole and it has not weakened them. The key is to make the hole very small and then take some tool, pocket screwdriver...I use a blunt Dental Tool like a Dental Pick, but this is for packing filling material...to push the ParaCord through the hole. Then you just have to wrap with constant pressure...etc. And they turn out very good.

I am not a huge fan of the WA-1 sticks. It might have been a goof, but one of my students manage to have one broken across his neck and little glasslike pieces went everywhere. Probably a fluke but I took them out of practice just the same. That is why I am now looking for the solid contruction of the sjambok.

I second Bandit's post--the WA-1 sucks. It delivers far too much shock into the hand, at least on harder targets, than I find comfortable. I don't dispute its durability or terminal effect, but I much prefer the Sjambok, at least once you've gotten rid of the handle sleeve that comes with it.

THAT, at least, Loriega's book got right.

What did Loriega's book get wrong [Please, no Sevillian Steel comments unless he is talking a Sjambok in that too! :D ] as over one year later, closing on two... I have not purchased it yet!

The funny thing about my personal view of the Sjambok is, pain compliance techniques usually suck. "Compliance" is an interesting word because most of the time, the person you are fighting has to be somewhat "compliant" anyway...in order to get things to work well with none of your teeth being knocked out.

The Sjambok offers astronomical amounts of pure, unadulterated pain...but unlike the electric pain of a closed ASP Baton or Kubotan during a wrist lock and roll...who are you going to punch when they are several feet away?

No one.

You cannot access them except to rush them and if you do that, you face a folder or something else that is nasty in their other hand.

So, in many cases, you can hang back and literally beat the piss out of an attacker who might not rush you because you have a CQC weapon in your other hand. Giving up on that, they might just tuck tail and run.

And the guy that can fight through the pain of a Sjambok dished out by someone who knows how to use one, I do not want to run into.
