After 360joules asked about "user" blades in satin or DC, I figured I'd take my SJTAC-LE out back for a quick test spin this evening.
No time like the present, right? Bill Heavey, my favorite outdoor humorist, wrote in one column that the first thing he does with a new piece of gear is to take it outside and wrap it around a tree. That way, he can get on with the business of enjoying it, rather than worrying about it getting scratched or dented. This tactic seems sound to me.
Last summer, one of my neighbor's tree limbs fell into my driveway. She didn't want it, so I chopped it up and stuck the logs out back of my storage barn. Figured I'd let them dry a bit and take them camping this summer.
Using a baton, I reduced four of the smallish logs/limbs (from 3" to 6" in diameter) to a pile of halved or quartered splits in just a few minutes. That big fat LE blade just barrelled right through them, as dry as they were. No real scratches to speak of (see third pic). Just a few "love scuffs" that were barely visible.
I can already tell though that I'm going to enjoy using this knife in the wild. Great balance. Fits my hand. Feels like a tank when I use it. And given its performance, I can't wait for that HOG-FSH in double cut to get here!
