Hi Ron,
Thanks for your reply to my post over at the general forum. I am still a bit confused and maybe you can clear things up for me.
You described SK-5 as a high carbon steel similar to O1 and Cold Steel list it as a medium carbon steel, this would imply a carbon content of .3 to .7% vs .85-1.00% for O1. What gives? Could you post SK-5's ingredients? Thanks!

Hi Frank,

I'm sorry, but I don't have the specific elements listing for SK-5. All I've been told is that it is similar to 01. If (or when) I get the breakdown, I'll post it here.

As soon as you find out, I would be interested also...
Hiding now:rolleyes:

I have a few SOG's in SK-5, so I just looked SK-5 up on Google. From what I can tell, SK-5 is a Japanese steel and it's equivalent American steel is W-1. The alloying elements are given as: carbon 0.8% - 0.9%, silicon 0.35% max, manganese 0.50% max, nickel 0.25% max, chromium 0.30% max, copper 0.25%. On Google I entered "sk5 steel".

Howdy Frank K!

Well, I see someone has the composition sorted out. But if I am not mistaken Cold Steel utilizes SK3 a tad lesser than SK5 which has a higher carbon content. Besides you have better styling with a Sog.

Hi Bobby! Good to see you made it out in one piece.

However let me state that the overall quality of Sog Kniiii...Zzzzzzzzz... "I love Sog Knives, I love Sog Knives, I love Sog Knives, I love Sog Knives....Zzzzz.." Huh?? Hey! What's happening???! Where am I? Oh, Hi Ron! Hope you have a nice weekend.

Krizzard. out.

Hi Guys,

I've done a fair about of looking into the elements of SK-5 and have yet to find anything definitive. My reference to O1 comes from a third-hand answer from our Japanese partners. I do have a relatively sound metallurgical breakdown of SK-3 from the Ben Baker CISO/SOG Recon Knife article (it's a LARGE file and you'll find the reference at the bottom). I think I heard that SK-5 has more carbon.

Hey Krizzard, yes I made it out ... my - well guess- is still sore from the spanking I got, so I didn't post at any of the other questions on future knives....
I am still curious about the difference between SK3 and SK5... I am sure Cliff would know:) :D

Ooooh this is going to hurt...
