I see alot of older SOG's use the Sk-5 steel. I don't see it listed on the AG Russell steel guide. Is it along the same lines as a 52100 or 1095?

TIA!!

More specifically, Spencer told me it's closest to O-1 or A-1 (I can't remember which he said...I think the former).

O-1 rings the memory bells for me...... great stuff, takes an incredible edge (just like my O-1 steel Randall).

Cheers,

Carl

The SK-5 steel is used also in traditional Japanese carpenter woodsaws, the ones ones that saw with a pulling motion, not pushing.
In these saws the steel performs well, keeps it's sharpness well and is strong yet flexible.

We use A-1 and O-1 in our shop to make fixtures and parts for oil field operations. They are similar alloy steels but A-1 is air tempered and O-1 requires oil quenching to achieve correct temper. Either will make a sevicable blade that will hold an edge. Because these are tool making steels they tend to be very tough as well but will rust with exposure to any humidity.
