Had the next addition to my collection sorted ie a recon tanto CS. So I go to order and see vast differences in price and thought like WTF?

It appears the same design comes in two different steels SK-5 and 3V.

Is that the only difference and why would I pay more than double for the same knife from the same company ... is SK-5 gonna fail or something?

Then there is the magnum which seems to be the same knife again with a traditional Japanese style handle.

Its not the same knife as it in different steels. 3V will be more expensive as its a great steel if done right.
SK5 will do fine for some tasks. What is your intended use?

Pig sticker and farm tool. I was/am sceptical of a tanto as I believe it to be be overhyped marketting of the katana/ninja thing. However some legit people vouch for it and the CS owner believes it to be a great thruster...who am i to argue.

Primarily I am in the well proven camp of the narrow, thin spear point design altho that design is rather fragile outside of its intended purpose. It is maximally optimised and hence of limited application. My hopes for the recon is it brings a point and adds wider functionality. Having said that i think the recon looks sweet and the video of the CS guy hanging off the monkey bar by his recon..... WOW that thing is a piece of farm machinery with a neat point and a sharpened edge.

As a pigsticker, uncoated SK-5 will patina quickly when in contact with blood. 3V should be much less susceptible to this. With that said, the SK-5 blade should work well in this use, just have to clean it more often. Strength in puncturing flesh between these two blades is moot IMO as they are both easily strong enough to do so. The SK-5 should be easy to sharpen using normal Arkansas stones whereas the 3V will require diamond hones. All in all the 3V will be a much harder blade, but is this needed in your application....only you can decide.
