Ron,

Has SOG run any test on SK5 in salty environs? I want to get the Bowie, but I live on the Gulf Coast on a salt marsh. 440C does good here, but I don't know much about SK5 and corrsion resistance. I wipe all steel down when I get home, but some rust on the way home which isn't good.

Hi Ben,

SK-5 is a high carbon tooling steel (in other words, not stainless steel). It will easily rust in salty enviornments and should be extra well cared for. SK-5 will out-perform stainless steel in every test except corrosion.

The Trident is basically the same knife, but with AUS8 (very similar to 440C) stainless steel. You might want to consider it.

Hey Ben,

Nope, no "blackened" version of the Trident is in SOG's future.

But....if you are interested and want to take a risk, having the knife beadblasted is actually pretty cool (the whole thing, handle included) and cuts the glare. It also make the handle a bit more "grippy." We can do it for you, but can't officially offer the "guarantee" (knife replacement) you don't like it. I've seen it and think it's pretty cool, but "cool" is in the "eye of the beholder."

Hi Ben,

If this is something in which you're interested, we'd better pick up the remainder of this conversation via phone. Give me a call at 888.SOG.BEST, ext. 228.
