Well, my 5 year old has been camping many times, but usually in the camper!

So it was suppose to be nice out, so we set out for a quick overnighter and some fishing at a local area.

Sandhill cranes are in the area right now and we had to listen to the racket they make all weekend! But they are cool to watch fly

We had a great time, got to do some camp craft and knife work with the kiddo and the weather was great, I don't think it go under 40 degrees!

He can't wait to go again. And me either!

I am very envious of you brother, looks like a great time! The little guy looks like he had a blast.

In a word.. AWESOME!!!

The snake looks like a Corn snake, but I'm not sure.

Your son is going to grow up to be a helluva outdoorsman just like his dad.

Awesome. I'm going to be taking my 6 year old out for his first non-camper trip soon. And several more times this summer.

Looks like you guys had a fantastic time. I love taking my son camping. What kind of tarp is that? Can you talk about your set up method. Looks very functional.

I don't remember enjoying a post this much in a long time. We're expecting our first boy in a couple of mounts, maybe that has something to do with it.
Regardless, looks like you guys had a lot of fun. Doesn't get better than that indeed. Thanks for sharing.

great stuff Skab.. little man looks like he had a blast..:) dig your camp set up too bro..

Nice ! Thats what I'm talking about ! My boys (twins age 7) have been hiking with me many times & they love the outdoors, nest month will be thier first "tent" camping trip, they are very excited ! They already have their own fixed blade (custome made by Koyote) & I'm going to surprise them with their own SAK the day of the trip. Your Tarp set up looks killer & the food looks good !

Thanks guys for all the kind words, he and I both had a blast and he is already asking when we can go again!

As far as the tarp set up, it's an Etowah 10x12 coated nylon tarp, I used (8) stakes and (2) trekking poles. I ended up putting a ridge line of sorts, using the outside tabs just cause I didn't feel like cutting the cord for each end, it really wasnt needed. Super easy set up, stake down one of the front corners, set your pole to length you want it, then stake the other. do the same in rear using one of the top webs to put the pole thru. And then stake out the sides. It held up very well, we got wind gusts up to 35 mph thru out the day Saturday. ANd it could be made bigger in the rear if needed.

I use this set up alot when no trees are available to hang my hammock. And we would have done that, but the kiddos hammock straps were too short, so next time out we'll have new ones.

man very cool trip for sure. fishing family and food , no tv or other bs , it doesn't get much better. you guys looked like you had a amazing time.
