I saw some cheap on ebay with J2 stainless blades. What is J2?
There is a custom maker here who make a modern skean dhu, but it's a bit big. I would really like to get a CS mini-culloden, but they're discontinued. Keepin my eye open for one.
Any ideas?

Cold Steel Braveheart, Cold Steel skean dhu (discontinued). Koyote, a maker on here, had one available in the custom makers for sale section.

J2 is 420J2 which most of us consider a good structural steel, not a blade steel. Tough and stainless, it makes a good wallhanger, not a user.

Ask on the Himalayan Imports forum here about a Rusty Skean Dhu. Fairly authentic, not too big, named for Rusty Slate, one of the great members of the HI forum. I have two of them myself.

Koyote makes a beautiful Skean Dhu and he is a custom maker: he can make one in your preferred size. You might look at his Zog Nit, similar to a skean dhu, but smaller.

Cold Steel Culloden: what a ridiculous battle to name a knife after.

A definitive example of why-not-to-bring-a-knife-to-a-gun-fight, and these fools at Cold Steel decide to name a scottish-influenced knife after it. I would take it for a joke, but I'm not sure Cold Steel's marketing department is bright enough to understand the punchline.

My advice: Don't buy a knife named after a catasrophic defeat. Least of all a Cold Steel knife named after the same.

The excellent french cutlery Perceval make, next to their suave folders like the Le Français and the L10 - both of which I have, such a knife.
I've not yet seen it in real life, but anyway my experience with Perceval is very positive. Except for a few damascus variants these use 12C27 which in my opinion is perfectly ok.
HERE is the link and below are a few pictures:

Kris Cutlery makes a good quality sgian dubh for a fairly decent price.

Rab Gordon makes beautiful and functional sgian dubhs that are more traditional but far from just the jewelry that a lot of other fancy sgian dubhs are. They aren't cheap but they are reasonable for what you get.

The Scots and the Irish seem to celebrate catastophic defeat. Some sort of blend of altruism/martyrdom. The French seem to share this trait. Especially the Foreign legion.

He has some very nice examples. "Real world" functional, affordable knives. I couldn't agree more.

Heh. Yeah, Culloden is a funny thing to commemorate. But truth is, martyrdom battles/lost wars have a long history of being commemorated in just about every culture. It's not unusual to see a Confederate flag on somebody's truck even here in southern California. All it takes is for someone to see some kind of nobility in the attempt/cause.
