What is more practical for survival and camping skeggox or average hatchet
Cool thanksA traditional American scout pattern hatchet is way more practical for average camping.
You've got a much better profile for splitting, convex cheeks that can be beneficial for throwing chips when chopping, and you'll have a poll which helps with balance and gives you a surface to pound in wooden tent stakes you may need to carve.
Now for survival where you don't know what you may need to pound on it if you use metal tent stakes when camping, then I'd suggest a half hatchet which has an actual hammer poll.
Is this a loaded question? What the heck is a Skeggox lol?
OK, I just educated myself. This doesn't seem like a serious question.[/QUOTE
Cool thanks
TheyI should say that you'll only really get convex cheeks with a vintage one ( not hard to find for a good price on eBay ) but it's not a huge importance for a standard hatchet.
Vaughan makes a good half hatchet, and an ok standard hatchet. ( The steel is good, but it's not fancy looking )
They look fine to meThey
What I mean is that they don't come sharp and the top and bottom surfaces may be a bit rough. They look fine to me
oh ok thanksWhat I mean is that they don't come sharp and the top and bottom surfaces may be a bit rough.
haha thanks for the links and helpSee,this proposed equation would contain apples and oranges...Your average "hatchet" being a tool for chopping(i.e. cross-cutting)wood,predominantly.
Whether a "skeggox" was a hewing tool(in spite of everything Hollywood or other yahoos may fantasize on the subject).
Here's a fair example of "skeggox"(if we must call it thatin action:http://www.robin-wood.co.uk/wood-cr...ng-the-worlds-most-iconic-viking-ship-part-2/
Here's a good overview of a few more similar tools:http://www.robin-wood.co.uk/wood-cr...ng-the-worlds-most-iconic-viking-ship-part-6/
And finally,if you must go off and "survive" somewhere, personally i'd just take along a forge(it'll save time later![]()
