sketchy commander mod...came in a dream

I have no idea if this would even be logical, but it did come to me in a thought one day. It mainly appeared cruel in design...functional??..probably not. Probably not even doable. I did give it some practical thought as to where transitions took place, serrations here, etc. So it wasn't like I just tooted out the idea. The sketch is merely a freehand with my '98 as a reference, so things may not be 100% proportionate.
Probably more of a toy than anything, at most self-defense, though most likely inherently weak like a civilian (if not more so). I just thought it neat as it would be based on an existing blade..simply with a little grinding taking place.

It'd be kinda scary if this exists, or has at least been pondered by someone! And I apologize in advance, if this is indeed the case.

Someone let me know if they think it might work...

Looks good...I think it would be awful tough to fit serrations inside such a tight radius, and you might want to either reduce the length of the hook or increase its breadth for reasons of strength.

Burke, excellent point. I put the serrations there because I figured they would lessen hangups on less willing materials. As the inside radius would be the most prone to that. That way, the serrations could tear/split their way thru whatever. I guess I gave little thought to how they would actually get there ;)

As for the hook point....that was the part that led me to liken it to the civilian. No doubt, the weakest part.

Squid....you're right...that is a Steve Ryan shape. Here I was, not even aware that the idea was influenced by an existing blade:( damn the subconscious.

The functionality of the gut hook in it's current place would be marred by the deep belly of the commander. I would suggest moving it up a little.

Forgoing all terminoligy (not that I'd know it anyway)..
The hook location was there to keep it in the primary grind (?) As opposed to traversing into the thicker part of the blade which is from the main grind line and ^up^ I didn't want that to be thinned or affected.

No doubt most any suggestions that are made would be correct. I have never made, nor constructed/designed a blade shape. Just thought this an intriguing idea.

in the immortal words of that fine thespian, Will Smith--"i have GOT ta get me one of these". if these don't exist, they should.! i wonder if Double E & crew have thought of this one??? should come in the same configurations as the Commander. Yeah!! that's th' ticket :D

Cool! I did a similar thing to my Benchmade AFCK. I never finished it though. I need to get it out and finish it up. It looked like a Ryan model 1.

I found my AFCK that I had started working on. Here is a picture of it next to the real deal Ryan model 1. I started working on the BM about 2 years ago and had forgot about it after I got my first Ryan. Its a far cry from the Ryan but looks similar. I need to finish it up one day.

NCBlades......

I'd say that looks preety darn good considering it was done to an existing blade. Don't think I'm up to carving my Commander, though.
Finish that thing up and post some closer pics;)

What about doing the same with a CRKT Ryan Model 7. Seems to me it would work better with thinker blades for more material to work with on the hook. As a bonus that knife is a lot cheaper if you butcher it.

Very cool idea!
It might not be the most original in the world, but it's a very sweet looking blade! The modified version is a vast improvement!

NCBlades,
AWESOME work on that AFCK, I'm going to have to whip out the Dremel and play a bit. :D

Very nice design. I don't think that strength would be much of an issue, due to the thickness of their blades.(eighth of an inch.) But i do think that keeping the hook sharp will cause some pain, because it is in the thicker part of the steel. You might also draw one out with no serrations, just to get an idea of what you want done in case you decide to proceed...

Regards,

Steve C.
