Skinning blades

A friend was on a successful hunting trip over the weekend. They got 2 white tails and a yearling elk. During the in-field processing one of his hunting partners produced an "ulu" type blade of modern design for skinning. They were working side by side and the friend got the job done about 5 times as fast he could. He tied the thing and wants one. Cabela has them but they are AUS8, I think made by Outdoor Edge, and he was looking for better steel. Does anyone know a dealer who might carry something like that made from higher grade stock, perhaps even carbon steel. He's even interested in a custom knife if that's what it takes. Thanks, Jack

Oh yes indeed there is one that is much better, and made in carbon steel. It's made by PJ Turner Manufacturing and called the Uluchet. Click here to visit their website. The best of the breed IMO.

What's wrong with AUS-8? I've always found it to be a very servicable steel.
Spyderco has a prototype ulu in the works for sometime in the future.

Paul - I agree with you. AUS8 is good steel. I'm no expert but I understand it is substantially the equivilent of 440B. I've got a couple of filet knives, one a custom job, in 440A which is softer than B and still does a pretty good job of edge holding.

However the guy I'm referring to is willing to sacrifice some corrosion resistence for toughness and additional edge holding. I noticed the skinner recommended above is made of D2, which contains less Cr but is high carbon, at about 1.5%. He seems to be leaning in that direction. I'll be looking forward to Spyderco's creation. Thanks, Jack

I'll bet that Outdoor Edge knife is a good piece of steel. But forget about the Spyderco. (sob!) I love my Spydies, but I saw their ulu prototype at the NY Custom Knife Show, and it was ugly, clumsy, with a narrow blade, and the partial serrations destroyed the original ulu concept. Hey, we can't win them all.

If I'm not mistaken, the Spyderco Ulu will be available in plain edge.
And D-2 is an excellent blade steel.

My hunter friend was pesting me again at work today. He's asking if I've run across any more ulu type knives through the forum. He's looked at the ulachet and thinks it too big. The skinner he used is small, with a T shaped, rubber handle. It's very no skid. The handle fits against the heel of the hand, and the shaft which flares to form the blade, is passed between the fingers. The whole thing is probably not more than 6X6 inches or so. He loved it. He's wondering if anyone makes a custom knife like that. He's got himself talked into high carbon, or D2, the latter being his first choice. Does anyone know of a knife like this in higher end steel, or can someone make it? Thanks, Jack

Roselli (www.roselli.fi) offers an ulu in their basic very good carbon steel, but it might be a bit bigger than you want. But it will be hell for stout.
