I am looking to purchase a high quality skinning knife and was just wondering if there are any manufacturers or custom makers preferably ones that are either loated in Canada or willing to ship to Canada and which quality of steel you guys would recommend for such a knife? I would like it to be top of the line quality.

I would suggest the Sharpfinger-inspired knife done by ib2v4u in D2. That's a proven and much loved skinning model, and the D2@60 rockwell means you can probably completely process 3 or more deer before needing a touch up. I don't own one myself, and I have never ordered a knife from ib2v4u, but I remember seeing that knife and thinking, "Damn, there's the ultimate skinner right there." So, I'm hoping you buy one and tell me how it was. :D :D :D

I have used an Old Hickory skinner & a Dexter-Russell beef skinner. Both work excellent. The Old Hickory needed to have an edge put on it though. No biggie to me but might be if you can't sharpen them yourself. Once the edge was on it, it was easy to keep it sharp with one swipe on each side of a butchers steel every now & again.

There was a similar thread posted not long ago where you may find some suggestions helpful.

Kyle

A 4-5" blade would be to long, I should have stated this in my first post but I need this skinner to be around 2 1/2" blade lenght for finner not rough skinning

Benchmade makes one the size you are looking for. Comes in two different steels, D2 is one.

What are you skinning? Are you skinning for pelts or just to remove skin? It makes a difference.

I am skinning bear, wolf, deer, coyote etc... and it is both for pelts and for just removing the skin.

Are there any manufacturers that make custom knives like this in S90V steel?? I am very interested to buy one

You might be able to find a good deal on a Dozier K8 in the same amount of time it would take to order a custom.
You would have to find a used knife though, as I think there is a 2 year waiting list for a new one.

One of the better skinners I have used in my 39 year hunting career.
