Has anyone ever skinned any game with the Military? If so, how did it work? I'd like to know how it stands up in such a function.

Thanks for the replies!

I plan to take my serrated military into the deer woods. My guess is that any sharp object will do to gut a herbivore. But to skin you need a clip point or a drop point to sweep through the tissue between the muscle and the hide. Plato, my German Shorthaired Pointer, and I went out last week to the shooting preserve. The military will do anything: cut through a tangled check cord or dress a bird. Anyway, I like carrying the military, my Wegner, or one of my light weight Goddards into the woods.

If you skinned critters all the time, several a year like a guide might, a nice skinner is nice. If you only skin a critter every one in a while, like most guys, it really doesn't matter to much what you use.

Very few hides are saved for anything these days, and if you do kill something you want mounted, a taxidermist, or outfitter is probably going to do the critical stuff anyway.

But having said that, don't let that stop you from buying another knife!

Thanks for your responses.

I carry and use the Military, but have not yet used it on 'critters'. I'm sure it would be 'good enough' at that task as well. But you both seemed to encourage me (in one way or another) to get a more 'function-specific' critters knife (at least that's the way I interpret it

). I've been trying to think of all the reasons (I've not been very successful!) why I don't need a Wegner. Maybe I do - just to be sure I've got the bases covered!

Military in my right pants pocket, Wegner in my vest. Sounds good to me!

Thanks again!

its about time we all just gave up and bought a knife disigned for each function.

i dont hunt, but dog gonnit if i dont need a good skinner.

(well, you never know... a critter might fall dead on my lawn and need to be skined.)

soon ill be walking around with a bandillaro type sheath system holding knives for anything i might run across.

(sorry , been a long day--not to many brain cells left)
