Skinny ASH, Great LOOKING knife

I wanted to voice this concern to see if anyone else has had this issue. I love Busses but I have noticed lately that knives coming from the BCS are not really all that sharp. Its been on my mind for a while but came to a head when I received my Skinny ASH this morning. Feels great in the hands but the edge on the last 3 inches is horrible. I looked closely and measured and it has somewhere in the neighborhood of a 60 degree bevel on it. It is totally un usable. The bottom half is better but not much, sporting in the high 30's. I guess I would expect more from a knife that cost over $300. I have every intention of keeping the knife because I know it is quality, I just will pay to have it professionally convexed so I can use it for its intended purpose. I don't want to start this to bad mouth anyone. Just suprised me today.

Thanks

Unusual, but not unknown. I've been luckier -- almost all my Busse knives came at least acceptably sharp and some came 'stupid' sharp (as my son says).

I'm absolutely certain Mr. Busse would be happy to put a good edge on that for you, if you so choose. His crew are working extra hours preparing for the Blade show, so I'd suggest you wait until early June if you choose to take this option.

Believe me, if you aren't happy ... Jerry Busse isn't happy.

Why not get some sandpaper and a mouse pad and do the convexing yourself? It's a great way to learn and you can get the bevel/convex however thin you want it. Plus you'll be able to swipe it back into shape after you abuse it... :)

I've actually done this to some custom knives, that were'nt very sharp the way they came f/the maker. Not sure why... but perhaps sharpening wasn't 'their' expertise. Heck, I'm anal enough to put a good convex edge on even the sharpest 'v' gind-sharp knives... unless they're paper-thin and will be used in the kitchen per-say... :D

This is always good advice. Learning to sharpen is a valuable skill. I'm just adequate ... I need to work on technique, so that I can make that 'stupid' sharp knife.

You'll find we have a number of really expert sharpeners here. Ban and Justabuyer come immediately to mind. I'm sure they would be happy to share their expertise with you.

I know Busse is a great company and I know that they would take care of it. The grind is bad enough towards the tip that I don't think sandpaper would do the trick in anything short of an entire day. I need some power tools for this job =) I pulled my HR out of the package when I first got it and it was insanely sharp, thats why this one came as suck a suprise.

I know what you are saying. My FAT GWs came with very unsatisfactory edges. The few ASHs I have received have come with acceptable edges. And the only knife that came hair shaving sharp is my BATACLE.

I have put a convex on my 3 Bussee that I got in the last couple weeks. If you are really into your knives it is worth spending about $200 and buying 1x42 belt sander from a home improvment type store. I can go from an ok edge to razor sharp in about 10 minutes. I got mine about 2 months ago and would not trade it for anything.

I find it's hit and miss. Some are quite sharp, others are not really at all. Kind of surprising considering the price of some of them!! I still love them though :D

My experience has been similar to husk5454's with regards to sharpness. My bactacs (le and cg) came acceptably sharp, but I sharpened them anyway. Much sharper now. My oj gw would cut hair, but it shaves hair now. My tigerhide culti is convexed on one side and v ground on the other. I haven't tested the sharpness on my hellrazor or my sus scrofa. My cgash is pretty sharp, but not scary sharp. By far the sharpest knife I've received from Busse is the SAR5, but even it is not spyderco sharp. Some of this is probably attributable to bevel angle, and some is probably grit size used in the sharpening, but I believe that Busse Combat and I have different expectations when it comes to sharpness. This doesn't stop me from buying their blades- I just know that I'll need to sharpen them and sheath them before I use them.

By the way, I hunt with G5 montek broadheads, so I know that you can get even a 60 deg (inclusive) edge wicked sharp.

I'm actually pretty content.

If all our Busses were 'stupid' sharp, what would happen to the lovely ladies of the Busse Crew?? I can put up with a little dullness to keep Amy-o's lovely fingers firmly attached to her hands. :D

i've sharpened (out of the box) every Busse i've ever gotten. the only one that didn't need it was the ASH-1 SE. i don't put stupid sharp edges on them either, but i require them sharper than they come to use efficiently.

stones are quicker than sandpaper. i use an extra coarse for reprofiling before moving to sandpaper

Assuming the knife is going to be a user, what better way to get to know your new baby than to gently hone her curves to perfection? Dullness out of the box is not a concern of mine, as you'll have to sharpen sooner or later.

all 3 battle mistresses came to me very sharp....

however, the fatty GW, skinny ASH came to me not as sharp....

When my Busses arrived and were not sharp I use to just return them to Skunk.

But the Bastid Hog just kept them :grumpy: :grumpy: :grumpy:
