Skinny ASH1 and SjTac

I currently own a Skinny ASH1. I was wondering if anybody could tell me how the SjTac compares to the Skinny. I want to avoid redundancy by not purchasing blades that can perform equally at the same tasks. Seeing the narrower blade on the SjTac, I question whether it'll perform as well as the Skinny in batoning/chopping. Would the SjTac carry significantly lighter in a high-ride kydex? Anybody know the actual weight difference between the two? Don't figure it's too significant.

Thanks!

Like most everyone here we will all say get both!!! But in the truest since of redundancy yes they are very close to being alike. Thickness, etc. I can't tell you the diff. in weight cause I don't have a scale, but Bro it just depwnds on what your doing. If camping and GP carry duty's are your thing, ASH-1. If your in the military or just like and lean toward the Tac side of things then the SJ. I own both, simple right? Wrong, I just go with the flavor of the day and grab which one I look at first. If I had to sale one, for me it would be the SJ. I just like the ASH-1 alot. Handles well and cut like a dream. It has a little bit more umf to chop with, but like I said they are extremely close. In stead of getting a SJ, go for a BWM and now your cooking... In fact a BOSS, ASH-1 and the BWM can do it all!!!

Russ,

Thanks for your feedback. I'm undecided still - which means I should do something about getting the SjTac out of my system. Like I said earlier, I'm very pleased with the Skinny - everything's on point about it.

Any chance you'd have some comparison pics of both?

To completely minimize redundancy, I'd be happy with just the Skinny and CGFBM (and I have a feeling that's what I'll end up with).

No, you won't. Just give it time. No matter how hard you try to avoid it, you'll have to eventually get your hands on a SJTAC. Just like I have to get my hands on a Skinny one of these days. It's just how it is. You might as well stop lying to yourself about being happy with the Busses you have, and accept the fact that you have to get at least one more. There's always just one more.

We all have enough knives. We just don't have enough Busses.

just throwing this out there, and I know some folks wont agree, but you may want to give the tankbuster a look in place of the sjtac...

Its overall pretty similar and they are more available now so you are most likely going to find it a bit cheaper than the sjtac. You might also be able to get the colors/handles you prefer and score a choiless version if thats a huge plus to you...

The sjtac feels quicker and has a less broad blade, but the tb just feels so good to me and is a tough and stout little monster. Its definitely a busse darkhorse and under appreciated blade.

As far as redundancy, I also have the Skinny ASH and love it, but I feel it would overlap some w the sjtac and/or tb. Although, when I originally got my tb, I sold my skinny ash then missed it so much wound up buying another one...

But, for the least amount of overlap, I'd suggest you jump up to a nmsfno (there are some AWESOME deals now) or go for a BWM direct from busse combat for the best mate for your skinny ASH. That'd really be a knock out combo and the fact that you can get a BWM for $350 is just icing on the cake :D

TrailWolf,

Thanks for your comments. Yeah - all three seem to have specs that are very similar... although I'm sure the difference lies in handling/feeling mostly.

I did look at the TB when it was still available through Busse during production - liked it... but not enough to buy it. Now that I got the Skinny (which I've wanted for a long time), I can't think of going back.

A backup wouldn't be a bad idea... then again... if I only have one I'll be extra sure not to damage it or lose it. ;)

Everyone says the BWM... nahh... I want the CGFBM.

Thanks.

Sufler,

Let me see if I can muddy the water somemore. HAHA!!!
Top pic: ASH-1 (Skinny), SJTAC-ETS, HR... Notice the profile similarity in the ASH and SJ (I'm talking edge here)

Spin shot of top down: BWM, HR, SJ, ASH-1 and BATAC... The blade thickness of bottom 4 of these are .200 +/- .0004 with the BWM being .212"

Blade length comparison: BWM-10.375", HR-6.875", SJ-6.375", ASH-6.5 and the BATAC-5.375"
***NOTE*** the cutting edge length of the ASH is 5.8125' and the SJ is 5.5".

Side view of all 5 just for OA comparison:

Are ya future Confused??? Get them all Bro and have fun!!!

I love the Skinny ASH....it is tough to beat that blade if you compare it to similar lengths for camping purposes. But that is just my opinion. It slices better than a thicker blade, yet can chop when necessary.

Thanks guys... I appreciate your thoughts on this. Russ... thanks very much for the pics. Believe it or not, your pics actually made it easier. I think I made the right decision with the Skinny and will stick with it (all I gotta get now is a kydex sheath for it). I have a Hg55 too.

I've been looking at the Meaner Street vs. Fehrman Peacemaker as a 'light hiker' belt knife.

Wise choice on sticking w the Skinny ASH - its the only knife I've ever sold and repurchased

If you have the Skinny Ash1, and the Hg55, you don't need no stinking SJ!

What you do need is a BWM, and a GW, and a Cultie, and AD, and Meaner, and a Boss etc etc etc etc.

Meaner Street, Meaner Street, Meaner Street:thumbup::D:cool:

I'd like to know what your reasoning behind the Meaner is. It ain't enough only 'cause you tell me to get it. :D I can get a satin finished Peacemaker with a kydex sheath for $225. At that price, I think I'm about $100 short of finding a basic Busse Meaner - if I'm lucky enough to find one. Help me out here, guys.

For one and the most important, Peacemaker AIN'T INFI!!! But with that said the MNR is a very comfortable knife that handles like a dream. My hands don't get tired tried to hold a small knife. The Peacemaker is not as comfortable to me(yes I've held them and I saw the light). Money is a good reason for a lot of people to shy away, but you have to ask yourself, will this knife be with me in 5 years? Will it survive what I'm going to throw at it?
If I ever damage it, will it be fixed question free? Then, hey you have us on your side. Can it get any better? Peacemaker is a good knife but the MEANER is in a league of it's own, I have kept 2 each of them and they ain't going anywhere. I know good steel, and this is it IMHO!!!
