I dropped a sage/tan canvas skinny ASH off with Garth from Busse Combat while he was at the 2010 AG Russell Show in Rogers, AR to have some of his magic applied to it and have been anxiously awaiting it's return. Then a couple of days ago, this is what came in the mail. Exactly what I asked for. A stripped & competition finished blade with standard thickness Blue & Black G10 handles. Thanks to everyone at the shop for yet again surpassing my hopes with such impressive work! I have a bunch of bruisers, but none with this kind of coloration, just amazing and sharp... forget about it!

So first thing I had to do was go and beat that ASH until she did the splits (which she does VERY well)

Great action shot finale caught by my girl as the wood went flying!

The skinny ASH was still shaving sharp afterward of course even despite chopping and baton duties. Definitely a new favorite!

And a comparison of my two favorite midsized blades. I must say that THIS skinny ash has quickly usurped the SJTAC as my favorite in the midsize, but not by enough to say I don't love them both.

Also, here's a shot of some of my other top contenders in the mid-size arena.

Nice!!!!!

Hmm, maybe my KZII needs a comp finish! I convexed the edge, but have not blended the bevel to the primary grind. I may not because it is so much work by hand.

Hi Tim,

I have a Skinny Ash quite similar ....except my grips are black linen and hand shaped ... this one was my first Busse .... hours and hours were spent polishing this blade to take a stripped finish to a nice mirror one .... since then it has had all sorts of finishes depending on the belts used to sharpen it .... those Skinny Ash's really take a hell of a zero convex edge .... the flat grips on yours intrigue me ... that woulld make for quite an easy carry profile with the knife .... sort of similar to the SAR 8 shape and style which fits tight in to your body for belt use .... I bet you will enjoy that one .... Garth does a great edge

As they get thinner .... they cut better .... mine seems to spend a lot of time in the kitchen now .... it is a better food prep blade than my kitchen knives ....

In my opinion, there is no better user finish than a competition finish. It just performs just like satin without all the blemishes when you are done. I don't enjoy coatings very much for my users, especially for splitting wood as I don't like picking the wood pieces out of it or watching the coating transfer to what is going to burn in my stove.

Peter, the only model I have multiples of is the skinny/le ASH1. I have a thin and a magnum handle on each blank and the thin ones just feel right. I will be rounding the edges of the handles a bit to make them more like the 2007 SE handles which is where I figured out what the perfect ASH felt like in hand. I tried smoothing both of the mag handled ones, a little on the sandstorm LE style and a lot on the sage skinny. They are ok, but not great. Both of the other two feel almost perfect minus the edges needing rounding a bit. The only real difference between the convex skinny and .22 thick flat grind blades seems to be the slightly larger choil/closer finger grip with a little more belly on the LE style.

That's awesome Tim, i love what Garth did to those handles. Your SA really looks sweet and it also seems to be a little pointer. Congrats nice job and score.

Looking good. That is certainly better than the standard production Competition Finish.

I amy want to do this to my Skinny Ash. Did you have the blade convexed?
What are the disadvantages of doing this?

The only disadvantage might be giving up your knife for the time it takes the shop to do the work. ;)

Thanks guys, I haven't been around much lately due to getting the place ready for winter but this one I felt needed to be talked about with all the best mid-sized threads around. A factory zero edge convex really is the strongest, sharpest edge out of all of my INFI. I can get a good v-edge on my edge pro, but it is nowhere near as tough at the same level of sharpness and rolls or dents much easier.

Guy, I believe that the shop is now blasting away the decarb completely on any CF job as there is none on my SJTac or this Skinny ASH and both have been done this year.

BBQ BOY, if you request a "Competition Finish" or CF treatment from Busse they take off the handles, strip it, and then zero edge convex the blade. However, they don't have to spend the extra time it takes to remove all of the INFI dimples to smooth it out and give it a satin or double cut bead blast treatment which makes the whole process a little cheaper. The result is a finish that doesn't show much wear at all, no matter what you do with it. There are no functional disadvantages to this at all, but it may take them a couple of months to do it if they are really busy. My request for thinner standard thickness handles in the color I wanted is what took the most time as they had to make them from scratch, but it was more than worth the wait!

I'm sure he meant Busse's Garth who worked the Busse booth at your show Mr. Russell.;) By the way, I would like to thank you again for autographing my sheaths at your show, and I would like to say that it was a real pleasure meeting you. Tom

I may be old and confused, but, I am positive that there is NO Garth here.

Yes, you are quite right and I apologize to you Mr. Russell for any confusion this may have caused on my part. As a result, I have edited the post to reflect a little more accurate info. It was a great show!
