Skirmish or Manix...

So they're both big hefty tactical folders. Pretty close in price. Skirmish has a frame lock and Manix is lockback. Which would you guys pick for EDC and why?

I have both.
The 630 is thinner (better to carry in your pocket), flicks better and have a bigger blade, while the G-10 grip of the manix has a better grip for some jobs, a smaller blade. If you're willing to sharpen them freehand, the leaf shape of the manix blade is easyer against the recurve of the 630.
I really don't like the color inserts on the 630 handle.

After all, it's a matter of taste.
Just watch the law of where you are planning to carry it, 'cause the 630 is not a "everywhere legal" size...

If you are willing to carry the weight, the Manix is IMO probably the best EDC on the market. That is based on the very functional blade shape, the strong lock, the size, and the ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE ERGONOMICS.

Manix all the way. I just love that knife. I've handled the BM (my dad bought one) and it is a good knife, no doubt, but the Manix has better ergonomics and the blade shape seems a lot more useful (IMHO).

I like big knives myself, but I suggest you also look at the Para Military next to the Manix (similar blade) and the Mini Skirmish next to the Skirmish. These are also solid knives with a bit of realism thrown in -- unless you specifically need a very large blade.

I also have both. The Manix does more work. The Skirmish get carried when I am dressed nicer. They are both great knives.

The Manix is great, just a little too heavy for regular cary for me. This is the same and only reason I no longer own a SERE 2000.

The Skirmish's design has ripped off ("sampled", as they say in the recording biz) a little too much from others without their consent.

So me the Manix for sure, but I'm holding out for the mini version of the Manix.

I love lots of Benchmades but they lost some of my respect with the Skirmish and some more with their decision to go with all of those handle scales made with cheaply anodized aluminum.
</RANT>

I still own and love several Benchmade knives, and will continue to buy their knives, just not those models that "borrow" so heavily or have what I consider to be unacceptably poor quality materials.

You should call up Neil Blackwood, tell him he's a ripoff artist.
And what knives are using "cheaply anodized aluminum"?
There's nothing cheap about using aluminum. I'm not sure what gave you that idea. That's like calling Surefire cheaply made, cause they're made with anodized aluminum.

Not to get into this but if anyone is at fault it is not Neil it is BM.

i have had both and prefer the manix for among other reasons its tip up, also the skirmish pocket clip is funky imho, the skirmish is just one of those i thought i'd love, then never carried it much after the first week or so........

dont know about rip off artists, i have always said the skirmish looks a lot like a EKI commander, but i'm in the minority IIRC. then there are those holes lol.

I am not connected in any way with Neil Blackwood nor Benchmade. I don't even own the Skirmish but...

I think calling Blackwood the ripoff artist is unfair. He's a very talented knifemaker and everyone can judge this himself just by looking at his other designs. Of course there are some similarities between Skirmish and other knives but I think and believe it is coincidental. Besides, Mr. Blackwood had added enough spice to the Skirmish to make it original and one of a kind.
If you want to see what rip off looks like check the Gerber Evo and CRKT M16 or many of Cold Steel designs. Just my opinion.

But form these two knives for EDC I would take the Manix hands down. It does not look as striking but IMHO is more practical and highly configurable. It's got strong ambidextruous lock, four way clip, great blade shape, same steel. It is also smaller and lighter = easier to carry.

For example?

On topic:

I would take Skirmish, because Manix feel too big in the pocket, and have too small blade/handle length ratio.

And for heavy duty I prefer frame over lockback - with exception of ER ;)

My post was meant as sarcasm. I personally don't consider the Skirmish as being a ripoff. I carry one everyday even. But fact of the matter is that it's Blackwood's design and if you're gonna state that the design has "ripped off a little too much from others without their consent." then you are effectively calling Neil Blackwood a ripoff artist.
You can say it's Benchmade's "fault" all the way, but they didn't design it. They just built it.
