Is the proper chisel grind edge on a skiving knife 45° or somewhere between 30° and 45°?

The (very basic) leather working tool set I ordered came in today. The skiving knife isn't very sharp (not even after stropping). The factory bevel is ~45°. Do I need to re-profile the edge to something shallower?
It's been a few days since I had leather shop in Jr. High, in 67 and 68. I don't remember what angle we sharpened the skiving knives to.

Semi Related Question:
Any idea on where I can get a pattern for:
(a) A belt holster for 3 or 4 pens.
(b) Mongol/Turkish horsebow quiver/case to carry the bow.

Thanks in advance.

My skiving knives are shallower then that for sure and they cut great. Even my skiving machine is shallower than a 45. No idea on the patterns.

Dave Ferry (Horsewright) is too modest. He makes the best skiving knife I ever picked up. AEBL steel, razor sharp and skives like a laser.

Gotcha. For others unless doing super heavy work saddles cutting 15-16 oz leather for a living, .040 is about right. For that super heavy stuff .060 to .070. All of mine are .040.

Magnacut is expensive. Maybe I should just get a round knife in cheaper steel?

I agreen with Dave, my choice for round knife thickness is ,040/,041, That thickness is the very best for the work that I do (8-10 oz leather)

I dabble mostly in holsters. I have an Osborne round knife, but use it for cutting chores. The skiving knives that I use the most are, a 12 mm by Weaver, and an Osborne French style.
