I was looking for information on the quality of SKM butterfly knives. All information I have found only speaks of Benchmade (of course) jaguar, bear, along with other dubious brands excepting SKM for some reason.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Micky, I don't think you can get a butterfly through Customs, better check before you order one...Bud K has them for about 6 bucks, I got one just for grins and was surprised to see that it wasn't half bad, Ive seen worse for a lot more money.

I belive that switchblades are the knives that are subject to import regulations, unless I am mistaken.

I am looking to get quality and may be forced to purchase a benchmade. I just want to know how good the SKMs are.

The BM stryker is an awsome knife i suggest going with that you will not be disapointed.

BM knives have lifetime wareranty and if anything goes wrong with them you can just send it back in for fixing.

Also you can send it back in for sharpening.

Unless the law has changed recently (and it might have, for all I know), balisongs are also prohibited from importation. That is why one does not see a flood of balisongs direct from the Filipinos, as they're the ones with a real passion for producing them. (No slight against BM intended.)

And tomorrow when you wake up it will be worse.

US Customs is not currently blocking importion of balisongs. That has changed several times in the past few years; quite recently Customs was choosing to interpret the switchblade law to include balisongs but once again a court has forbidden that.

I've never seen an SKM balisong or seen a post on them, but their autos do not have a reputation for any great quality and it doesn't seem likely their balisongs would be any better.

If you're looking for quality I'm afraid the only options are either an old Benchmade or a new one handmade in the Philippines. Several forum members who live in the Philippines are trying to get businesses going (and we're all egging them on) ... the problem is locating smiths who do really good work; not all balisongs made in the Philippines are very well made. I'm not sure just what the current status of those efforts is.

I have decided to just go with a benchmade, and not worry about the quality issue. Perhaps I will get a jaguar and replace the pins for something cheap to work on.

And the only import laws on knives I could find seem to only govern Automatics, which bali-song knives are not subject to.

Snubber,

I picked up a Bear butterfly a couple of years ago. My wife and I have used it around the house and in the yard. It has held up well. It takes a razor edge and sharpens easily even after my wife uses it to dig grass in the flower beds!

(Yes, I know it's a knife, not a spade. After last time I think my wife is learning.

Quality. Something difficult to find in a knife style that's dominated by the so-called China cheapies. Benchmade is pretty much the only stand-out, but its product lines are long discontinued.

If you're just starting out with balis, check out Popular Link (www.popularlink.com) and pick up cut-price (but not cut-quality, at least no more than usual) Jaguars. You can get a whole stack to practice with and abuse until the new Benchmade lines come out.

The main problem with traditional-style balisongs is that they lack some of the engineering advantages (such as the kick, which keeps the cutting edge from smashing against the liner) of redesigned knives. Some of the beautiful Filipino hand-crafts are pretty sorry as functional knives after a few flips.

A big problem with the cheap practice Jaguars that I favor is that a breaking pin will generally have catastrophic results (I've been very lucky), but is difficult to detect. I've yet to have problems with my latest order (the newer Jaguars supposedly have better pins), but I also haven't put any real stress or time on them.

Yes, I picked up a couple jags to keep me flipping while waiting for the BM44S I bought to show up...

Nobody seems to have any information relating to SKM's balisongs.

Oh well, guess i dont care too much anymore.

I was reluctant to post since the info i have is only 50% possibility to be true, but since you got your 44s on order then I guess it's okayt to ramble.

I have a SUSPICION that the SKM butterflies are the infamous ITALIAN BUTTERFLIES you see on blade auctions. and a friend of mine says that those knives are light and flimsy.

again no backing on this one. only speculation.

Not to fear! Check out BM's website concerning the re-tooling of their Bali line!!! I suggested a Khukri-shaped Balisong with gracefully curved stainless handles.

Yes, I have seen many 'Italian Made' butterfly knives that are of anonymous orgin, and do not get very good reviews. And if they are anything like their switchblades (i've heard) they should be crap.

Oh, and jags are crap, unless you have the ambition to replace the pins, then they are not-so-crap knives.....

I am so looking forward to the new benchmade line of balisongs, in fall of 2000 mabye...
