I really like my Albanian model but was tired of the ten round magazine . I got an "easy installation " 20 round one but had problems getting it to lock into the rifle .

Anyone else have this problem ? Took it to gunsmith & he did a bit of grinding on the mag
[mrp $ 64.00 ] & handed it back with a $29.95 bill. Now
%$#*&@ thing only works if I leave the mag in & feed it frome above .

Help, comments other than I've encountered the fickle finger ?

Oddly enough the rifle was designed to work with the fixed ten round magazine. As there are dozens of manufacturers of the SKS it would be a pipe dream to think an aftermarket made magazine would work in all of them. For any reasonable reliability the aftermarket magazine manufacturer would have to make a different magazine for each brand of SKS. I sold many many cases of SKSs in my gun shop and I never found an aftermarket magazine that would work reliably. I told my customers that if the want an SKS that held more than 10 rounds to buy one that was made at the factory to use AK magazines. Even the Russians and the Chinese never tried to modify them as it was too large a problem in logistics.

I've heard a lot of stories about troubles trying to get an SKS to work with detachable magazines. Installing a 30-round fixed magazine and loading with stripper clips works.

Thanks for tips & info. The old dummy was trying to attach the mag with the bolt closed .

Easy fit with open bolt but a round is chambered. Fortunately it has a very positive safety lever .

Thanks.

Years ago I bought my friend a fixed 20 round Chinese extended magazine for his SKS. It never did work right. However, he did get a perverse amount of enjoyment painting the star on the side of the magazine red! And he's German!

ya know i have a chinese fixed 20 round with the star, and it feeds fine FWIW, oddly enough it only holds 15 rounds though lol.

I like the stock mag of 10 rounds. You can get closer to the ground that way.

Tapco 20 rd is the best detachable. Note that the safety only engages the trigger- the bolt is not affected by the safety at all. It is still possible that a sharp jar could result in a discharge.

I appreciate your tip. Had a brain burp & decided the BEST safety will be to put an expended cartridge at the top of the clip. That way a load is just one pull on the charging handle.

Any other thoughts ? You young'uns are pretty clever.

Much obliged .

Leave the bolt locked back with a full mag inserted, then you need only to give it a small tug and let it go- ready to fire.

The best way to get an SKS with a reliable detachable magazine is to sell it and buy an AK !!

I had an SKS that gave me fits trying to find decent detachable mags. I spent a small fortune trying to find decent mags. Tried all the major players but none gave me reliability. I finally sold the darn thing off.

Why sell it off? I bet it work fine as it was originally made, can't fault the gun because your modifications to a nearly perfect design didn't work. An unmodified SKS is an excellent piece of gear when left alone and allowed to work as intended. It is the same with my Hakim, I know several people have made modified mags to fit them, I bought one and it worked....most of the time. But the factory ten round mag works every time and I got rid of the twenty rounder.

For those who don't know the Hakim is an Egyptian made copy of the Swedish AG-42 Ljungman. It is in 8X57 Mauser and is equipped with an amazing muzzle break that reduces felt recoil to that of a .243. Mine is set up for urban combat in the south pacific.
