so im the mean time im gona hit a few pawn shops and buy one that will tide me over till the 10th. besides pitted bores on the yugos what should i look for in a decent sks? anybody have any sks' on here, if so post your pictures.

also, in a related question, where could i have a sks rainbow titanium coated?? :D im being searious.

i have a chinese para SKS, got it in the early 90's for like $90(i am positive it was less than $100 tax and all) with the sling/cleaning kit/scope/some stripper clips. they are really great for the $$, mine is fairly accurate and no jams at all, my bud used it to kill a 200+ lbs hog last fall, worked just fine.

that said for a little extra ya can get an AK and imho they are a lot better rifle, for me anyway, both mine seem a little more accurate than the SKS, ya can get better accesories (ie scope mounts, stocks) and ya have detachable mags, a big "+" in my book, just a neater rifle. i enjoy the AKs a lot more myself.

SKS's are ok though if thats what ya like, the yugos are probably one of the better ones, SKS's arent as cheap as they once were, they used to be almost disposable lol.

Yea I had a Chinese paratrooper model for a few years and I will say it was an outstanding rifle for the price (I think it was around $150).
With a folding stock , flash supressor and so forth , it made it even nicer but since I live in The Socialist Republic of Commiefornia I had to get rid of it  damn liberals... Anyway.
A titanium rainbow job ? That would probably cost far more than your gonna pay for your rifle  :D

Whatever you do to your SKS, I would have to advise against THIS  :barf:

That's is NOT my SKS, by the way, and I'm hesitant to admit that that IS me shooting it. ;)

 - I don't know about the pink cammo job dude. That's just somehow wrong - you would expect it to be weilded by a pink tutu wearing transvestite rocky horror show ailen "freedom fighter" or something... :D

The SKS is a fine, ubber-reliable medium power battle rifle. Accurancy is generally slightly better than with the AK due to the longer barrel length (obviously comparing individual specimens to one another may yeild different results). You can disassemble it without tools and it is fun & cheap to shoot.

This site is the best resource I know of for information on the SKS (or just about every other military surplus rifle & most pistols), including a free, step by step disassembly video, a printable manual etc: http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/index.asp - their forums have some very knowledgeable folks on them too.

Anyway, I have a Yugo; no issues with the bore or with accuracy - it is capable of 2" groups at 100yds (and sometimes I am too - I mostly shoot without support or just using the sling though). It is made from milled components as opposed to stamped metal, they are plentiful & cheap right now and the lack of a chromed bore is actually supposed to improve accuracy. Here's a range report from the aforementioned source: http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting/yugosks/index.asp
http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting/lastgreatsks/index.asp

That is not to say that other SKS variants are lesser - a Chinese with stamped parts actually won this competition between several SKS variants:

I would recomend the SKS and in particular the Yugo SKS without reservation. As a matter of fact, I had posted a thread on the practicle / tactical section awhile back on the subject of my favorite jack of all trades rifle (welll basically) and concluded that there really wasn't anything I felt was better - at least not personally. Especially when you factor in the cost of the rifle / ammo - nothing really compares.

i aint glot a clue what it is, could somebody help me out? the reciever is marked with a triangle with two markings (mirror images of each other) inside the triangle. next to that theres three chinese letters and then 7061982. the stock, slide, and back of the reciever is mrked 61982

i called around and found some around 160 at some pawn shops but they were pretty rusty so i hit the most expensive shop in town. i payed 225 (255 total plus ammo) its rust free and the barrel is MINT.

The blade bayonet (as opposed to the typical 'spike' type) threw me for a minute but I'm pretty sure you have an early chinese:

"Chinese Type 56 SKS developed in the mid 1950s, a copy of the Russian SKS. Manufactured upon Soviet supplied equipment in Communist China.Chinese Type 56s were in production from 1956-71.Rifles serial number 9,000,000 (1965) and higher had the spike bayonet fitted while those below 9,000,000 had the standard blade type bayonet. (contributed by Michael E. Kreca)"

You will want to disassemble it before you try firing it of course. The firing pin should rattle slightly when shaken back & forth - if it doesn't, you will need to disassemble it as well, clean it & then reassmble. This is very important; if the firing pin gets gummed up you may experience a slam fire, which will basically empty your magazine 'full auto' style even if your finger isn't on the trigger (!).

So it is important to make sure your firing pin moves back & forth freely - if so you shouldn't have any problems. Either way, I would only load one or two rounds at a time for the first 20 - 25 shots or so just to make sure everything is peachy. That is a good rule of thumb for any new or newly acquired semi auto anyway though...

Here is perhaps the definative SKS information resource for your perusal:

Happy surfing dude

The Bulgarian Ak's from the "Arsenal" are great bargains. A post-ban fun gun should run you around ~$350. If you have more to spend, their pre-ban style post-ban rifles are sweet at round ~$700-900.

In the SKS rifles, grab a Russian if you can find it. They are very solid rifles and worth the money. I remember when I got my first one for $169. A lot of people are happy with the Chinese rifles but, I have found the quality to be inconsistent - Buyer beware ;)

between me and my dad this is our 78th rifle and its by far the funniest to shoot :p ive got alot of plans for mods, i think im going to keep the stock clip for the time being but im gona add a monte carlo stock and a muzzle break (maby)

or maby even a folding stock.

i got one of the 20 round fixed mags with the star cast in it it fits/fuctions fine but only holds 15 rounds anyone else had this problem?

i took it out a while back, looks funky on the para carbine, imho

Perhaps I should have said that the SKS is uber-reliable with the stock 10 round internal magazine... Aftermarket hi-cap mags are not recomended.

Spend the money on the 10 round stripper clips intead & devote a little time to practicing. You will be suprised how fast you can be with them and after all, you have 2 more rounds than Audey Murphy needed plus the ability to make 'combat reloads'...

You should go visit the forums on the above-referenced site. I'm sure you will get a bit more input there. That is a new complaint as far as I know but I have always stuck with the original mag in my Yugo.

If it's not the original mag, I would replace it. If it is the original mag and it is not functioning properly, I would switch to the 10 round until you can find a replacement 20 rounder that doesn't exhibit the problem. Maybe on Ebay...?

Happy shooting!

turns out my grand dad has a highly modifed 1963 like mine, same factory and every thing, but who ever modded it lost the top cover (replaced with aftermarket with scope rail) and the stock is replaced with a non numbers matching stock, the gas cly and piston are milled aftermarket and appear beefier, and its been modded for a ak47 clip. its also missing its cleaning rod and baonet. ive known about this gun for years but havent seen it in a long time, even then, it does not look like a sks any more.

its a shame the numbers dont match because his is number 832 made in 63 and the blueing is at 98% im gona replace the midding and modded parts for him but it still wont be numbers matching.

when i bought mine i got an aftermarket 30 round mag for it, non detachable, again looks kinda funky but works just fine, mine anyway,

Sweet!

BTW, does anyone know anything about the short barreled SKSs from Norinco that were designed from the factory to accept AK mags? Rumor has it they can be had on the cheap ($250 - 300) and I'm probably going to take the plunge rather than get an AK - I like the idea of a 16.5" barrel SKS & the gun reminds me of the M1 carbine which I have always liked...

Anyway, if anyone has any experience with that version of the SKS please speak up...!

Thanks!

a bud had a detachable mag SKS, worked with all 7.62 AK mags, worked great also, this was in the late 80's/early 90's, it was cheap then but i have heard (on the net, AK47.net) that the detachable mag SKS's were higher now, $300 or so IIRC, imho high for an SKS, ya can get a WASR for $270 or so, but the det mag SKS works fine. the long mag kinda looks funky on it imho, i like the std box the best for looks myself.

i dont think ya can own them in kali though FWIW.

edited to add that most if not all the detachable mag SKS's i have seen (including my buds) did not have the std military looking stock on them, they had a kinda sporterized monte carlo looking thing on them, some may like that i didnt. ya could always put a choate on it or take a dremel to a std military stock i would think.

Yeah, I see what you mean about the monti-stock. Maybe I should just go weith the Romainian AK clone / WASR instead - they can be had for around $350 here & take the hi-cap mags...
