Sky City ?

I thought you were about to announce a "Blue Light Special" on Isle 3. :D ;) Man I miss Sky City, what great stores. :( :(

What a joke, its an attempt to keep lying to the people here that living in a hot, crowded, polluted, expensive and ugly city is better than forsaking every gadget that comes out and keeps their nose to the grind stone. There is lots and lots of space in Japan but no one wants to use it as they dont want to live there as they will then be perceived as 'Inaka-mono' or peasants  Yeah Tokyoites are so Cosmo, especially the puking on the trains and peeing in the streets, not to mention the loud hawking up of phlegm from nearly every man over 45.

Countless programs have run on TV documenting the lamentations of people who have 'U-Turned' That is, gone back to the rural areas from the major cities. These same shows reporters have been found to be just fabricating stories for years and as a result no one is willing to pay for the licence.

There is a really low birth rate here, the graying population is huge, manufacturing is in its death throes and they need to build this? Its just a way for the building company to make a killing. Next thing you will see a need for Soylant Green

I think it is a fantastic idea. And if anyone can do it, it is the Japanese-- the world's greatest engineers.

Most working class people in Tokyo spend up to 4 hrs a day commuting back and forth from work. Japan NEEDS space, no doubt about it. They barely have enough room for such frivolous diversions as golf, and anyone who is lucky enough to own a golf membership can use it as collateral for most types of loans.

I saw the hour long special on Discovery on Sky City about a year or so ago. It blew me away. What also blew me away were the two shows I saw on the History Channel on their Super Structures series regarding the friggin island airport they made, and that immense bridge (longest suspension bridge in world) they built connecting the main island to a smaller one. Both structures are amazing feats of human engineering.

If anyone can do it, the Japanese can. And they need to.

Muwahaaaaaaaaaaaa nice one!

Care to expand on that? You don't feel they are the world's greatest engineers (maybe 2nd best?), or are they just mediocre?

I think they can lay claim to that superlative with those last two structures they built.

In a related piece on Discovery Channel about the John Hancock building, I thought to myself what a nice place to live if my job forced me to be in such a big city.

The thought I had as I watched both shows, was that they were essentially recreating the small town I grew up in within the big ugly city by providing a complete oasis within the confines of the building. I find that very attractive, you may not.

Atlanta dearly needs that sort of living and working situation. $3000 a month in rent got me within 8 miles of work. I averaged 90 minutes of commute time on a normal day and spent as much as 4 1/2 hours getting home when some idiot weaving in traffic decided it was time to move on the after life. This was not an isolated event. The gridlock encouraged people to do stupid things behind the wheel to numerous to even begin to make meaningful list. 3 hour commute times were common. I often sat at the on ramp for anywhere between 45 and 90 minutes during mornings, mid-morning, lunch, afternoon, evening, whenever - it just didn't matter.

Dallas was headed the same direction when I left. Central Expressway and 635 are nearly as bad as the rings and interstates in Atlanta. Phoenix :barf: :barf: :barf:

rant mode off ;)

Sky city has a certain Orweillian feel to it but, it is attractive compared to some of the alternatives. Until urban planning takes hold to help right some of the wrongs that have been done and are being done right now, buildings like the John Hancock and Sky City are going to look attractive to a lot of people.

I know we havent seen eye to eye on a lot of subjects K, but believe me most of the good things you hear about the abilities of the Japanese comes from them. I have been here for over ten years and prior to coming here would have said a loud 'Here here' to your assertions that they are the best engineers. However, ten years on has shown me that their stuff can be really poor, especially tunnels.

You would really have to be here to see it and anything I put here that is as negative as it should be would be construed as racist so I won't bother.

I seriously doubt they could manage (meaning come up with an engineering solution to) a project like the Big Dig, widening the Panama Canel etc. Even their floating airport in Osaka is sinking after only a few years....

Dubai, UAE

This country may not get much press in the west but, it should. When I think of the Mid-East, Far East and, Asia I generally think about consumer electronics and transportation (Japanese cars and public transportation in Asia). UAE has taken it's limited oil wealth and used it to fuel its economy and overall development. These engineering projects are just one example of the UAE's focus on the future. Beyond engineering in general, you have banking and tourism. Many nations could learn from UAE's example.

I wish the USA had better coverage of world events. Instead of coverage of news worthy events in Africa, Asia, and the rest of the world, we get 24/7 coverage of the OJ Simpson trial, Micheal Jackson, the runaway bride, news helicopters doing live footage of some idiot in stolen car......you know, real newsworthy events like that. I miss Deutsche Welle where I would see stories on a global scale with coverage of sites like those in the links posted above. Should I really have to rely on the Discovery and Travel channels to learn about events and engineering feats in other countries? Rant mode off.

I am curious about the comments regarding Japan's engineering ability (or lack of). Are their tunnels really that bad? Regarding the other projects mentioned, is the amount of soil settling really an engineering failure? What I have seen of their bridges, Tsunami, and earthquake engineering look impressive from what little I have seen.

the honey buckets from restaurant toilets through the front door, passing through the dining area ?
When my unit returned from Korea we trained recent draftees on Hokkaido & I went to Otaru ,a distance from Camp Crawford on pass. That was a disgusting event even though it was done in the early morning. My hotel would be rated at least 4 star except for that.
Guess Cosmo Edo is above that.

Uncle Alan :barf: ;)
