skype

From what I've heard, Skype is halfway decent program, and I've heard that you can get a trial version for free (I'm not entirely sure about that though, as it's hearsay). I've used VOIP programs a bit, and it seems like Skype might be worth a try.

Its better then having to pay long distance rates lol....I used to use a VOIP program to call friends who live in kansas and missouri, so it saved a lot of cash.

you can call any phone that is in the US untill the end of the year for free then need to start paying

I've never really used it (I have Skype, just don't actually make calls with it much) since I have a cell phone and long distance is free, but I have heard that it is very reliable and now it is free 'til the end of the year. So why not try it out for free?

Off to Gadgets and Gear with it...

Skype is pretty cool. I used to use it on this online game , it had issues at times but with some of our team in Finland and Australia you sort of had to marvel at how it worked.

I've got it, never use it. Some have mentioned "free till the end of the year", do you mean calls in the US, or we'll have to start paying for the Skype program itself?
Because if Skype is going to cost money just to have on the computer, it's gone.
TIA!:D

I've been a big Skype fan (and user) for about two years now.

Skype is free to download and free to use WHEN MAKING A COMPUTER TO COMPUTER CALL. That is, if you call another Skype user and communicate via computer, there is no charge. It's just like IMing, except with audio. You do of course need either a headset or a mike and speakers.

Skype also offers two services that require you prepay to use -- SkypeOut and SkypeIn. SkypeOut allows you to call any landline or cell phone -- i.e., a 'real' phone number rather than another Skype user, while SkypeIn allows you to choose a phone number that folks on a landline or cell phone can use to call you (i.e., they don't need a computer).

The prepay deal requires you to buy 10 Euros of credit at a time; each SkypeOut or SkypeIn call is then deducted from your account. The cost per minute is VERY cheap, even international -- it's something like $0.01 or $0.02 per minute (yes, that's 1 or 2 cents).

I've never had dropped calls to 'real' humans (i.e., family or friends), but I have had problems where some voicemail systems or automated answering systems can't handle Skype calls -- the systems think I've hung up when I haven't.

The latest Yahoo Instant Messenger with Voice (YIM) uses the same VoIP technology, has excellent quality, can call to regular phones, you can even get a number for it so that others can call you from regular phones. I started with Skype, but connection reliability was problematic. YIM with Voice has had so far much superior reliability for me, and I use extensively now (including calling across the Atlantic for 2 cents a minute). I no longer have a long-distance calling plan on my land line.

Highly recommended.
