I've been lurking a bit but this time I'm asking for some help. I bought an item at the St. Louis knife show today and I think I know what it is but the seller didn't and Google has not been my friend this time. I believe it was used in a drug store for counting pills. That's why I bought it to give to a friend who is a semi-retired pharmacist. Today they use plastic. Sorry to be long winded but, if anyone can shed some light on my "find" from today, I would really appreciate it.

It's stamped sheet metal with a swing out rectangular blade that's about 5-1/2" from the hinge to the end, 1/2" tall, and it's 1/32' or so thick. The edge is not sharp. It's marked Skyway Utility Knife and has a patent number that I can't ferret out so, that's no help. I was hoping to post a picture but I don't see a method for doing that.

Thank you all.

To post a picture as a registered member, upload it to a web hosting site. I use Imgur. It's free.

Once uploaded, copy the BBS code for the picture address and paste it into your post.

You can also copy the web address, and use the picture tool in the tool bar. It's next to the smiley tool. Click the tool and wait for the pop-up, then paste the address in to the pop-up.

It sounds like one of the older pill Palets than was used by Pharmacists.————- I don’t remember seeing a folding one? But I wasn’t a pharmacist, just remember as a kid watching them count out to fill prescriptions through the glass at the local pharmacy Variety store that had all kinds of stuff besides the medicines...

I'm going to give it a whirl. Yes, that's what I think, too, Laurence.

Hey Bob, just wanted to say that I have one of these Skyway knives as well, but mine actually has the original blade (a double-sided, razor-blade style utility blade that attaches to those two rivets on the piece that folds out), and I don't believe it's a pill-counting spatula. I can add some pictures of the complete knife if you want, but it seems be simply a very rare boxcutter from the 40s.

The patent number on my knife is 2245096, which links to this patent filed by R. L. Penney as a "cutting implement", approved in 1941. I can find almost no other information about the Skyway utility knife on the internet or anywhere else, which means that unfortunately, finding replacement blades is essentially impossible.
