I have found that using a liner makes a lightweight bag usable in the winter. Now I realize that in Florida, I don't need a sub zero bag, but every little bit helps.

The other good use for a liner is as a summer time bag, when it is just not cold enough for a real bag.

I have that same liner, but have only tried it at home. It will be awhile before the temps drop enough to use it with a sleeping bag.
I keep the house cool, with a ceiling fan running in my bedroom, and frequently sleep on top of the bed. I need a fleece throw or poncho liner to be comfortable like that, and the Reactor was fine. It's gotten quite a mix of reviews, but I'm optimistic that it will actually add 10-15 degrees as claimed. Should keep the inside of the bag clean if I'm dirty, and hopefully allow my 40 degree bag to get down to the freezing mark.

I bought a winter and a summer one for about 7 bucks apiece from Sierra Trading Post, el cheapo off brands. Both work great and keep the sleeping bag from getting nasty.

I'm not sure how cold you plan on camping out in, but in cold, humid conditions a non-breathable sleeping bag liner keeps your sleeping bag dry from all the perspiration your body puts off and what you're looking for is called a vapor-barrier-liner.

This is important b/c as that perspiration begins to condense into moisture and then water which is *usually* trapped inside your sleeping bag and compromises it's insulative ability. Not good.

The Reactor is a great liner. We have them and customers seem to really like them. I use the Reactor Extreme myself and like the extra degrees that it gives me over the regular Reactor. During the summer, it works as a bag by itself around here.

fmajor, I usually camp 3 seasons, here in Italy it's often or may be humid at night or early in the morning so i'd like something like you say that keeps the bag dry and provides dome more warmth/insulation

Don't get anything but 100% silk.

Here is the liner I have been using for a couple years now. I crawled in it when it was 50 degrees outside and I was in shorts and a T-shirt. I could have easily survived the night with no trouble.

I use it with my poncho and poncho liner now to. I also have one of those AMK Bivvy Sacks that I have used it in to. Great little light weight emergency set up.

I got a $6 nylon liner from campmor I think it was.
That and a AMK Bivy 2.0 is my lightweight sleep system.
Together they pack to about the size of half a loaf of bread. :D
Any sleeping bag that small was WAY over my budget.

The reviews I've read thus far seem to be most people are happy with liners when the major design purpose is to keep the bag clean.

A lot of people reviewing bag liners tend to report more negatively about the advertised improvement of heat rating to the sleeping bag. Its always hard to tell given the subjectivity of public reviews on places like REI and often lack of experience of reviewers, however this kind of statement appears so routinely that I tend to believe it. At least don't start kidding yourself that you will get 5 degrees or more out of your bag rating. Realistically, if you want anymore than 3 degrees lower than your current bag rating you should probably look at a new bag rated for the target temperature rather than tweaking what you have.

At least that is my take on things.

i bought a cotton liner while visiting Sierra Trading Post one time.

i absolutely hated that fucking thing. it twisted up around me and i couldn't get it untwisted while in the bag.

i got up, out of my bag, untwisted from the liner and stuffed it in a corner. washed it when i got home and it's still around the house somewhere. it didn't last half a night.

no more liners for me thanks.

I bought an inexpensive zippered fleece liner. I use it alone for a summer bag (although you really have to be sure about the weather... if the temps get too low you can end up miserable. BTDT.) It's very lightweight and comfortable. Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't ever remember using it as a liner! I've spent a few very uncomfortable nights due to being "underbagged" in the past, so I don't hesitate to pack a warmer bag instead of taking the chance that a lighter bag plus the liner will do.

Stay sharp,

There is another, just as important, reason to have a sleeping bag liner. It keeps skin oils away from the hard-to-clean sleeping bag.

Bags, especially down ones, are a bitch to clean. Anything that reduces the number of times you have to do so is good. My bag liner gets laundered often, by sleeping bags have never been cleaned (well, apart from once after my cat did something unmentionable on one).

Personally, I am sold for life on silk liners. They weight nothing and have great comfort and warmth.
