Hi,

I'm planning on getting a sleeping bag for backpacking. I'd like to keep it around $150 or less.

I'm pretty interested in the Snugpak Softie Elite 3. It's synthetic and has a comfort rating of 23 F.

I'm also considering the Kelty Light Year Down with a rating of 25 F.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Jason

Here's a review of the Kelty: http://www.backpackgeartest.org/rev...25 Down Bag/Owner Review by Patrick McNeilly/

Common knowledge is that down is great if you think there is little to no risk of the bag getting wet for whatever reason (no tent/bivy, tent/bivy succumbs to weather, you fall in a stream and get your pack wet, etc), otherwise go with synthetic. I personally choose synthetic - I don't like having to baby my gear, and I've lived all my life in areas that get torrential thunderstorms. Haven't been caught in one without shelter or with inadequate shelter, but I figure it's just a matter of time.

Kety tends to over rate the temperature on their bags. Snugpak is good stuff, but hard ot find a deal on unless you live in the UK. Campmor and Sierra Trading Post are good places to look for deals, as is REI's outlet.

I prefer a synthetic bag for general use and absolutely for wet weather. I have a one pound down bag for summer only. 20F bags are all around 3 pounds. Marmot, North Face, and Mountain Hardwear are good brands. Moonstone went out of business last year and you might find some straggler closeouts-- their sleeping bags were good.

I have a Kelty Lightyear that has poly fill in it. I haven't tried it out yet.

I've only had experience with snugpak, and find that their bags work well. No problems with any of mine. Comfort ratings seem to be right on.

Are you taller than average? If so, Coleman has a Diamondback that I can comfortably sleep in, and I'm 6'6".
