Guys I'm looking for a sleep bag that rates down to about 5 C. I get hot in bags and hate being or getting sweaty. I need average length but nice and wide in the shoulders and back.

Any suggestions from the larger guys?

How much are you willing to spend?

You can get custom made ones with your choice of filling and made to your body size.

Nunatak

If you're looking for just something nice go with Western Mountaineering.

At least they're still MADE IN THE USA.

Try a HELIUM 400, Im a big guy and I have plenty of room.

The 400 looks about right. I had a TNF Cats Meow 3D and felt like a sausage in it, talk about contortion trick trying to get the zipper up and then your arm back before the circulation died

I can live with up to 1KG

Thanks guys, I knew this was the place to ask ;)

The North Face Goliath 3D is made for larger people, especially around the upper body. Only thing is that its rated to 0 degrees F. You can always vent using the two-way zipper if needed.

This is the bag I am using now funnily enough, its actually my wife's as I couldnt find a smaller bag with the low rating. It does fit me well but its just too warm.

Just had a look at all the suggestions and have been inpressed with the Sierra Designs and the Western Mountain. I think I will go with the Sierra though.

Thanks agian all that helped out.

Ditto on the wiggys. I have an ultralight and overbag I can configure for most climates. He makes big boy sizes too.

That's funny, indeed. How about a Snugpak Softie 3 Merlin with an 'Expanda" panel ? Looks like it will fit into your temperature range. You also have the whole line of Snugpak sleeping bags from Brigade Quartermasters to choose from. :)

Good call I can get the Snugpak at dealer rates. If any of you want a bag that goes down to nothing look into the Jungle bag, its freekin tiny when packed up. I hadnt thought about the expanda panel, brilliant!

Cool! I'm thinking about getting the Merlin myself, with an Expanda panel, of course. :)

I've been thinking about the snugpak as well...

Havent really heard how well it would stand up to a lot of use though! Packs down tiny!

(Allergic to feathers... No down for me :grumpy: )

If you get a Code Green or Black they are really tough. Most of the UK military use them and they have strengthened foot areas so you can wear your boots in the bag.

I think I'm going to get the Merlin 3, I just sold some softair guns on the auction so its almost free :D

How is it when it comes to sharper rocks and such rubbing up against the fabric?

It'll get a TON of use... trying to figure if it'll last a few years of near constant use. :)

From the Snupak site

Ripstop Weave
• Lightweight
• Tough
• Highly Breathable (will transmit 12 litres of moisture per m2 per 24 hours)
• Wicking
• Soft to touch
• Wind proof to the industry standard of 3 cubic feet per minute (this keeps strong winds out or when used as a lining warm air and loft in).
• Water Repellent a British Standard Spray Rating of 4 Minimum (water repellency can be maintained by a cool tumble dry after washing and periodic retreatment with suitable after care products such as Nikwax or Grangers).
• Completely manufactured within Europe (Extruded, Woven and Dyed & Finished).

Where it is used: As an outer fabric to sleeping bags to give a good balance between toughness and functionality

Thats pretty cool...

I find theres a balance between light weight and built to last that is hard to find... some light weight stuff is crappy and tears all to pieces, and some of the cheapest heavy stuff is the best built! Problem is heavy on everything ends up with a 60lb pack... :(

I read a less than spectacular review of a snugpak on one of the many gear review sites... think it was SGT something or other...

Had an old black bag that wasnt warm enough at 45 degrees f! The fellow that wrote the piece was complaining that the bag had no loft... ;)
