So I'm on duty today. Stuck for 24 hours on the 270' medium endurance cutter that I call home away from home. My wife calls me and tells me that I got a package in today, all that I can think to say is "Finally!". I just received my second order from Texas Knifemakers Supply, the first one being the SG4 knife kit with the modern bowie grind. I've been waiting for a week and a half to get this stuff in, this time, I'm making my own knife, with my own design. I recieved 1.5"X3/16" O1, Blackwood scales, and layout dye. I can't wait! Any ways, back to the sleepy. Currently it's 0345, and I just got on watch, I'll be here until about 0900. I figured that I'd go to be around 2100 so that I could get a good solid six hours of sleep in before watch, no such luck. I layed in my rack until 2200, just tossing and turning, my mind racing about getting to work on my new toys. I figured that I was just to uncomfortable to try and sleep so I decided to get up and find something to do until I get tired, (Side note: If you want to fall asleep, don't play video games) I ended up playing Halo 2 on the messdeck from about 2215 until 0300. This is not going to be a fun watch.

When we were working midnight shifts with nothing to do, we drank cold black coffee so the pain in our stomachs would keep us awake. By the time the sun came up, the static in our headsets sounded like someone talking out there, but we could never quite figure out what they were saying ...

We didn't have video games in those days but we did have beer.

Lord Nelson, I'm an old Coastie myself and I've pulled many a watch in my time so I know what you're going through. Which WMEC are you on? I've heard stories about those chopped-off 270s.

Troz,
I'm on the Tampa out of Portsmouth, VA. These 270's realy suck, they ride like crap, and break all the time. Can't complain to much though, we are forced to suffer through port calls like Cozumel, San Juan, Trotola BVI, and of course GTMO. I love that place.

Ah, GTMO. The land of amazing zoological wonders like banana rats, giant iguanas and crabs that happily walk on dry land. I did have some good times at the Barrel Club and Cable Beach. Sometimes you've gotta make the best of what you get.
