SLEIPNER or MAXAMET

Depends on what you will use it for. If you’ll be cutting/using on abrasive material, Maxamet probably wouldn’t be the best choice.

Hrrmm, both look the same in barstock and come annealed :P. Suppose it depends on the knife design ,intended use, preference , and sharpening competency than comparing bars of steel :p

I have a few bars of Z-MAX which is similar to MAXAMET. Excited to see how it performs in a small 3" EDC fixed blade.

I actually recently had a Z-Max EDC made by @Robert Erickson, @68HRC - will be sending it to Pete over at the Cedric and Ada channel on YouTube for edge testing soon.

I don't expect it to beat Rex 121, but I'm hoping it places third on his leaderboard, ahead of Maxamet. The custom heat treat should help.

I'm curious - what two knives were you looking at that your choice was between these two steels?
Yeah, it seems like the question is really a "this knife or that knife" question.

Unless you're creating your own knife.

Yep, especially since Maxamet is only available (in the production space) on Spyderco folders, whereas Sleipner is mainly Lionsteel bushcrafting knives.

I can't imagine a situation where I'm trying to decide between a PM2 and a full tang bushcrafting fixed blade :)

Its nice that's its more available, I heat treated some Z-max to 69.5rc, so it definitely pops in hardness. The Maxamet I heat treated got harder though with one of the coupons hitting 71rc and made more MC type carbides with less M6C at comparable austenitizing temps.

I've been wanting to do some head to head testing but have been more focused on cpm 15v since it cuts longer.

It was between the titanium bronze Lionsteel sr22 in sleipner or the grey g10 spyderco pm2 in maxamet they still have on bladehq I still plan on getting the sr22 soon also tho.

Why the SR22, and not the ROK? M390 would (probably) serve you much better, on a folder.
