Sleipner steel or D-2 steel on a HEST

I gave mine to a young policeman who needed a useful folder and I'm reordering one for me. Want the best all around.

I have a HEST 2 folder in D2 and a HEST II fixed blade in Sleipner. Both are great. I'd just do the deep research on each--depends which of their stronger properties are preferable to you. The Sleipner may be slightly easier to sharpen and a but more rust resistant....BUT, sure love that D2 on the folder which is what I carry mostly. Both are GREAT knives. Good luck.

OK I did a bunch of research and ordered a HEST with the Niolox steel.

Why did you choose Niolox, if you don't mind me asking? I did a casual browse in the interwebs and couldn't find too much info on it. I bought a HEST/F with Lohmann Niolox steel but I chose it because it is a sterile model that uses standard hardware. It's my only Niolox blade and I haven't had it long so I've yet to get acquainted with this steel. I'm not a steel expert by any means, but it seems pretty good so far. I'm kinda surprised how much I like this knife.

I spoke to a Major I know who got one of the first and he said there is really no choice but the Niolox he has had for a short time seems to combine the best of both other steels. He did his tour as a Company Commander with a D-2 and still has it but wanted in on the 'cutting edge' so he ordered it. I eel the same way and I have the money to order a D-2 if I want. For my next I'm thinking of a Southard because he is a cousin I've never met.
On a side note I used my D-2 to pop open a car door after a wreck to pull a WW2 fellow out. (It didn't need much but the engine was starting to burn) I put that on here and got lots of grief for it. Yes, all of the DPX knives can be used as an emergency crowbar if immediate fairly light work is needed like moving a door about a half inch so it will open.

Sleipner could be seen as an upgrade for D2
Same wear resistance, same corrosion resistance but much higher toughness.

Niolox is stainless and has a very small grain size, it can take a very sharp edge unlike the more toothy edge of D2

Hi, wanna ask which is better Niolox or Sleipner ??? They both are a better version of D2, aren't they ? Which is better ???
Thanks !!!

There's a new limited edition DPx HEST/F in Elmax which is a great stainless steel: Moteng Exclusive DPx HEST/F Mr. DP (Coyote G-10, Elmax Stonewash).

I got mine from Whitty (usamadeblade) with a discount: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1190293-DPX-Hest-Folder-Special-Elmax-LE-(Error)

Thank you very much for the recommendation RamZar. We promise to always work hard to keep are customers happy!

There is no better or worse steel. Just better or worse for your needs. They are not "better versions of D2". One is a stainless steel ( niolox) , the other is a non stainless alloy steel. It depends on what you want out of a steel. They are all basically compromises of the 3 attributes we look for. Abrasive wear resistance, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Pick any two of the three attributes and use that to figure out what steel you prefer.

Kind of over simplifying it but that's the premise anyway. Sleipner is probably ( I haven't tested them) tougher and more wear resistant. Niolox is more corrosion resistant with lower but still good scores in the other attributes.

Once again I haven't tested them personally and don't know of any direct comparisons of the 3 ( D2, Sleipner , and Niolox) . I have D2 and Niolox but don't have sleipner yet. I've heard good stuff about it and it would likely be my choice of the 3. There are other steels I'd pick before any of these 3 though.

It depends on what I need the knife to do.

The designer of Lionsteel themself said than Sleipnir hold an edge longer than M390.

Hey, The Mastiff, thank's a lot. Corrosion resistance is not what I looking for. "Rusty" steels are not a problem for me, so i thing that I will try the sleipner version. Thank you, again !!!
