Slicer or Spanto?

I'm about to order my first Hinderer knife, an XM-18 3.5". Should I get a Slicer or Spanto grind? What are the differences in functionality? I like the look of the Spanto better but I hear that it doesn't cut so well. And for hundreds of dollars, I want a tool that can justify its cost. And yes, i plan on using the hell out of my knife.I'm looking for personal experience only, no hear-say or conjecture.

Well if its your first hinderer then I reccomend the spanto. It is a great iconic design with a lot of functionality. Also it depends on how you plan on using it. The slicer will probably be better for daily use but the spanto has more steel at the tip. I just got my first hinderer back in December XM-24 with a spanto tip and I highly recommend it.

Ok I'll take a bite out of this very personal choice and easily debated topic.

My Spantos and Slicers all cut what I need cut and impressively well. Maintain your gear and it will take care of you.

Ultimately, if you buy one you will still want the other. Not that either is bad but because one will always wonder which would work better for them.

Not knowing how you'd use the knife it's near impossible to say one is better for you than the other.

XMs are very strong knives, even the Slicer is "no joke", it's "overbuilt" and reliable. All XMs are reliable to the point of inspiring confidence. An attribute not easily obtained.

A thin edge can slice better than a thicker edge, but can also dull and possibly chip faster. Personal choice to make.

I have a slicer. It's nice. I'd prefer a spanto for the aesthetic, though. It looks so great. I don't see myself hindered by the uhhh comparatively thinner slicer blade, so it really is, preference. St least from the perspective of a novice.

My bite of the apple.

If God showed up and wanted my entire Hinderer collection tonight I would kindly ask if I could keep my XM18 3.5" SPANTO Flipper
I would then curl up and cry myself to sleep hugging my lone favorite knife that has cut anything and everything (to include my finger) I ever wanted (or didn't) to cut.
Start by getting the one knife that everyone should have IF they even remotely consider themselves a Lover of Great Knives - then go from there.
Your next one will be a Slicer then.
If I ever run into you at a show, ask me to see my 3.5 Spanto (Right front pocket) IF you don't find that knife wicked scarey sharp
You can have it.;)

Thanks so much for the feedback! I maintain my blades to the best of my ability using the Spyderco Sharpmaker with UF stones and leather strops with plans to get a Wicked Edge in the future. It looks like I'm going to get the Spanto now.

You will not regret it. The SM is a great maintenance tool along with stropping (take a look at our thead(s) on sharpening the XM)
The WEPS is a nice system (have that too) and of course the Ranch offers a sharpening service as well at a very reasonable price that includes return shipping.
Let us know when your new knife arrives, Enjoy :)

So glad this topic was posted I didn't want it to be my first post in the hinderer forum and get shunned from the start Lol. Not that its a bad thing you fellas run a tight ship. Which is a happy ship.

Tight Ship? Where? ;)

Seems Happy though, stick around :)

Start with a Spanto, the iconic Hinderer. After that, you'll need a slicer. Then you'll need both in the other sizes......

Soon you'll have this.... :p

I've had both. Currently, I only have a Spanto.
Honestly, I had an easier time maintaining the Slicer.. The Slicer also worked better for my tasks at work.

That being said, the Spanto is Ricks signature grind, and looks more badass.
So I really like both for different reasons.. And plan on having and keeping both.

Now Rick just needs to come up with a hybrid grind so we can have both in 1 knife... Yup, Splicer.
Haha

Pretty much already exists. Rick's custom Spantos are hollow ground so they are a nice blend.
